Hi people, when im 20 (2 years away) I am seriously considering taking a year out or more and going globetrotting, I'm after any and all advice from people who have done it.

Also what books people reccomend. I'm probably thinking of going to south america area, brazil, bolivia etc. or maybe canada and surrounding areas (haven't quite decided yet) but i've always thought about doing it for quite a while now.

but like i say im after any and all advice reguarding books what to pack etc. because im looking to gradually start planning everything bit by bit and then hopefully it should be a case of deciding when to go.

Thanks for any and info people :)

Really do apprieciate it :)

I dunno if you've considered this already but me and th missus were planning a Euro trip. Interailing can come out very cheap. About £300 for a month long train pass for the whole of Europe. Pretty good deal if you ask me. Of course it sounds like you want hotter, more extravagent(sp) locations, just thought I'd make sure you were aware of it.

thanks like i say im going to save all this so im going to take all the advice i can see myself going to europe at one point, but was also thinking of getting a worldwide plane ticket, expensive at first i no but im sure itll save you money in the long run plus you can fly pretty much as far and whenever you want

Oh also, a lot of people say don't travel with friends unless you're 100% sure (And I mean 100%) that there's not going to be any friction. It's not hard to see how it can ruin relationships/friendships. I wouldn't know myself, just quoting a Europe book :\

originally i thought of taking a friend but now more thinking of going on my own. people have said like the first 3 months were fine after the 4th they wanted to kill eachother lol. plus if your on your own you can go at your own pace do what you like and more importantly go where you like

hey,

I'm currently on my world trip for a year before having to get a proper job! Currently in Auckland working but only for another week, then three more months of solid travelling :-)

I've managed to stay sane travelling with my girlfriend, if you ever want to work any where or want to stay any where for a while then it's much better sharing rooms etc.

Our trip is USA and Canada, Fiji, New Zealand (where we are now), Australia, then Africa (Joberg to Nairobi). Definately do lots of research on where you want to go etc, there's nothing worse than turning up somewhere and theres nothing to do!

favourite places so far - Chicago, Las Vegas, Vancouver, pretty much all of Fiji I have seen. Would have liked to go to South America though, maybe next time! :)

Hey! Slinkie, so how long have you been going now.

Did you save up a big whad of cash and go travelling everywhere then work to save up some more then carry on travelling etc?

if i can take an email address off you i may email you from time to time lol :)

Like Slinkie, I'm also currently on a year out travelling around the world.

My trip so far has taken me through Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand and now onto Melbourne (Commonwealth Games & Grand Prix). The rest of the trip will be a hop down to Tasmania, up the east coast of Australia and then onto New Zealand, Fiji, the Cook Islands, Tahiti and America.

If you haven't finalised your destinations yet, I'd definitely consider S.E. Asia - I've visited some excellent places there, and it is incredibly cheap! Some of the small islands are brilliant :)

Best bet is to start saving up your cash ASAP! Make sure you sort out any visas you'll need if you want to work anywhere, a 12 month working visa for Australia is relatively simple to get.

Hey,

Obviously all the tickets and stuff were paid for in advance, it was about 2 grand each for flights, insurance, a couple of nights accom in New York (our frst destination) 60 day greyhound bus pass for the states, greyhound bus pass for Aus and a prepaid trip in NZ (so quite a lot). We got it all through STA travel, they gave us loads of tips and help even though we weren't students anymore! Your best bet is to go into an STA shop and ask them about it. They were all really helpfully in the planning etc

Then it cost us about 4000-5000 to get across the states and canada and fiji with a bit left over for NZ to keep us going while we found jobs (which was really easy to do!)

The more you can save the better it will be. We missed out on a few things due to cost but doesn't mean we can't go back and do them. We're enjoying just getting by with the cash and seeing how things turn out!

Hope this helps!

Anything else you need, email address is in contacts page of website in sig :)

All i can say for the best advice (well if you want and can)
Is save up as much cash as purely possible!! :D

I managed to save loads (and then borrow some) and went just about 6months travelling without having to do a single days work - trust me best way to do it, without having the hassle of trying to find a job and running out of cash.
Plus just make sure you do every single acitivity you'd like to do, dont ever be like 'well i like these 2 so which should i do?' just do them both - once in a life time opportunity ok!

Check the 'Lonely Planet' books - they are pretty much bibles for travellers.

Oh I did the whole Oz & NZ trip - highly recommend it as a starting point as its pretty much designed for travellers!! great fun :D

Here are some useful sites that will help get you started:

http://www.lonelyplanet.com
http://www.roughguides.com

^ these are pretty good at basic info if you haven't quite decided on where to go and contains a lot of the information found in their books for free.
Also check out their forums for travel experiences etc.

http://www.thetravellerslounge.co.uk/home.htm
^ This has some good info on the different around the world / multi-stop airfares packages available (and which are best for e.g. South America travel) and links to different travel agencies, some of whom have interactive RTW journey planners.

And of course don't forget the Foreign Office website which has really good up to date info on visa requirements and safety issues etc
