Need some advice on a decent yet affordable tripod. I have a Canon 1000D, so I'm by no means a professional, but I would like something well built that will last. Is this possible for around the £40 mark?

Secondly, is it worth buying a shutter remote for use when shooting on the tripod, I'm guessing so in order to keep it as still as possible. Any advice on a remote, would be most grateful.

Cheers.

I got myself a 'Konig Photo' brand 'Professional Tripod' from that rainforest place.
£40ish, it's solid, it's steady, it can go down to about 4" off the ground (up to the base plate) and it comes with a ball head. It's no Manfratto, the ball surface is not Teflon BUT it does the job. It feels professional and worthy of use in the wind.

I give it 4/5 * for the price and quality. Loses star for it's weight, all in the bag provided, it feels like 3KG, which is pretty heavy for travels / trekking - but if I, a skinny ranty orient can carry it along all day and use it within my comforts, I'm sure many will be fine.

And yes, a remote shutter is a must especially when it comes to long exposure / bulb mode. However, if you're careful, combined with say a 2second shutter timer, you can achieve pretty much the same thing for £0. Bulb mode might be abit trickier.

I would disagree with this to a degree, I've done a few long exposures just pressing the button but I've been grounded on something solid which does help so unless you're very shaky you'll still get sharp images. I guess it depends on where you're shooting and of what. Ideally though yes a remote shutter is better but no means the top priority.

Any other advice on tripods?

Not at £40... I was also looking for similar, but after looking around and reading reviews etc. I went for a Redsnapper which came in at £75 (you can get 10% off if you're a TalkPhotography member). I can't fault it, not that I have much experience of tripods but it seems pretty well made to me :)
