consumerism

It's only a problem if you start buying loads of crap you don't need or getting ripped off.

I have curbed my spending recently as I am saving for holidays/house deposit.

Got me a LCD telly etc, sure I could go 3D but it aint worth it yet. buying stuff is a 2 way deal at the end of the day. I don't "need" it most of the time.

But I still got a new Android phone because I want one. Had it before the Samsung Galaxy TV adverts even began. ITts deffinetly better than the iphone, wish I hadn't bought that if anything.

Just remember don't get carried away with having the latest thing and just think, "will this actually bring me more pleasure".

I have recently decided going skiing is better than a new gfx card every year now games are just console ports. :(

I think the OP should just give in and buy loads of gadgety stuff they can't afford.

The Chinese economy depends on you.

Enjoy your gadgets.

It's the industrial revolution. China can't readily skip it.

If only it were that simple.

The thing I find funny about it all, is how so many European/western countries are like "look how green we are now! We've cut pollution by 1/3!".

But in reality theyre still polluting the planet just as much as they were 50 years ago, the only difference is they moved their factories to China (or wherever). So they can claim their own country is greener, but they are actually still responsible for polluting the planet just as much as they ever were (probably more).

It isn't just about being green though is it.

People will only work in factorys 12 hour days if they are getting money to buy stuff. But when you have a Government you can't vote out that pays you naff all then it really isn't much better than slavery.

Lack of democracy and freedom is the problem with China. Luckily they still need 'us' more than we need them so they better increase the value of their currency for starters then maybe some human rights.

It is a disgrace they have been allowed to advance so quickly and far without any respect for human life. Obviously we arn't going to boycott them but some tough negotiations between the USA and China are happening as we speak.

I like the part where we sell those countries our carbon credits and make money selling them the right to pollute on our behalf. That part is awesome.

And by awesome I mean batpoop insane.

And again... nor did we 150 years ago.

That's not a good enough reason imo, a lot has changed in 150.

We can't change China. And there's no way in hell we'll take our trade away from her. Who else are we going to buy... everything from.

I agree, there is nothing that you or I could do about it, that doesn't make it acceptable though. Point to be made is that if we weren't over the top with consumerism we could probably produce a lot more in the UK and people would buy it but obviously at the moment people can't afford to pay bills let alone spend money on better quality goods.

Advertising is mainly lying. It is an art in stretching credibilty to its absolute breaking point through clever psychology and slick presentation. Those who practise it are the minions of satan. So say I!!!!

Surprised that this thread hasn't had many replies, guess it shows that consumerism is ingrained in people's lives so much that they don't notice it.
