I'm looking to build a new PC in the next few days and I'm contemplating getting a 120gb SSD for running my OS and apps.
I'm totally new to SSDs and so my knowledge on them is very limited. Can somebody explain to me in laymans terms exactly what I'd need to do / need to avoid doing, if I got an SSD as my OS and Apps drive.

Would it be a matter of simply unboxing it, plugging it in and installing my OS exactly as I would with a normal SATA drive?

I've read about flashing and updating the firmware which has thrown me a little...if somebody could clarify things for me I'd be super grateful.

If using Win7, plug in and go, it should sort everything else out for you. You will presumably be using large files for those things so you will be wanting a drive with fast transfer rates, probably the G.Skill Falcon. No need to worry about firmware with that drive.

Does Windows 7 support appliations such as Photoshop and Premiere? I would be going for the G.Skill Falcon if any :)

Don't see why not. Pretty much supports everything that runs on Vista, bar some sound card drivers.. but it is a beta OS, and while I've had no problems using it as my main OS on both laptop and desktop, you shouldn't use it if you'll be totally screwed if it goes down. For example, if you depend on it for work..

Okay, thanks for the feedback.

As for an SSD - what do I have to do before I install the OS to make sure the firmware is all up to date etc? Or is it literally a matter of unboxing it and plugging it in.
