I have just backed my HD up to a spare drive using maxblast which first formats and then copies all files onto second sata drive (mirror) when I rebooted with the new mirror it said I have to ring microsoft to register with in 3 days.

As its a clone of my orig drive why is the software requesting this action?

I have had to go through this before after several crashed HDrives after reloading windows several times.
What I want to avoid is rebuilding the system software from scratch when I OC my system and it buggers up the system driver files and wont load.
XPis an oem version of xp sp 2 fully updated
any Ideas

It's done it because the serial number & possibly model number of the HDD has changed - this is one of the things taken into generate the hardware profile of the pc before activation. If it changes a significant amount, you have to reactivate.

If you're restoring the partition onto the same drive following a screw up, you'll be fine. It's only doing this because it's a different drive.

Just re-activate online (or it'll probably have to be over the phone). As far as I'm aware, changing the HDD shouldn't cause MS to kick up a fuss.
