copyright advice

I recently did some work for a local hotel/restaurant amounting to about 30 images and 20 hours work. I had agreed a fixed price (very cheaply) based on a few hrs work but suffered from significant scope creep, however being my first paid photography I stuck with it. The bulk of the images are 200x200 pixels so very small but they are now asking for me to send all the originals to their marketing agency.

My issue is I don't know what I should be doing regards copyright. Should I be trying to retain rights to the images by means of some sort of contract or is there a more standard way to go about it?

thanks for any advice

it all depends on what you agreed to do in the first place, and what they are asking for now.

unles you transfer the rights to the pictures they should stay with you.

I would make sure you have an agreed written agreement of what is expected and agreed to.

I thought copyright must remain with me but i wasnt sure about the ability to use images for any purpose once they have been handed over. I'm not too worried about signed contracts at this point in time and have simply sent them an email, but I think in future I will try and find a template contract or seek advice from someone who has done this type of thing before.

Cheers

Stuart
