Vista 32 even though shows under dxdiag that you have 4Gb will only actually use 3.1Gb at any one time. Yes it will certainly help with paging issues and you can get reasonably lazy however you will hav 1 stick sat on its arse doing bugger all.
Move to 64 and all 4Gb will be utilised by the OS but the knock on effect is that 32bit applications will be emulated, this is normally done reasonably well however there have been proven cases where you may get issues. The associated threads running with WOW64 (emulator) will also increase your CPU usage slightly. The other downside to 64bit is certain gaming manufacturers will not warrent support on there titles with 64bit O/S so your kind of on your own. On the plus side there may be future releases that specifically support 64bit.
If your going to use 4Gb then it might be worth your while sticking a cheap 2nd partisioned drive in and creating a duel boot for 32bit vista or winxp & 64bit vista, you always have a fall back then if a game or application doesn't work well.
Thing you can try before purchasing more ram, try unistalling unwated TSR's that are resident on your bottom right hand side task bar,turn off Aero, monitor what's hogging your memory in the performance centre.
