Corsair CX430W preview

I know all that... I still agree with what I've said above.

Corsair's aftersales, the appearance of the unit, and the braided cables make it more attractive. It isn't expensive at all. It's a reasonable purchase.

I'm not buying one. I have a server up my loft which has a very very basic nVidia card in it, a quad core, 8GB, RAID card and 11 HDDs. If I didn't have a spare PSU to put in it and I had to buy one then the 430W would do the job. I get free postage from OcUK and I'd sooner buy that rather than any other around the price point.
Except for the fact that this PSU doesn't have anywhere near 11 connectors for HDDs. According to my research, four SATA connectors and three 4-pin peripheral (Molex) connectors.

JG did not have any problem with the rating of this unit ...
Most people take into account derating due to temperature, we have yet to see how it will do at higher temperatures.

The CX series were always designed to be budget/generic replacements. They compete very well against a lot of notorious generic "brown box" psu's, winpower etc.

I don't think they were ever marketed, priced, or designed to be used in any kind of high end system.

As somebody mentioned, they are simply expanding into the generic/budget arena with these models.

anyone used this unit, claims 85% effeciency - good for this level of unit.

single 12v rail, and seems a good entry point

The problem is that these units are replacing ones that were far superior at the same or higher price. This is why there's such a uproar against them.

Good point actually, the whole range has become very confusing, in the beginning there was hx, and it was awesome, then there was tx, which was not quite as awesome but relatively cheaper. Now we have about a billion model names, all with various oem. Cx, vx, and these gold "leet" ones.

It's almost as bad as graphics card names. A definite marketing fail. Especially the early excellent reputation they built.

Yep. I put one in the build I did for my Nephews Xmas present a few weeks ago. I'd get one while you still can as I don't think Corsair are having them made for them anymore.

STOP PRESS! :D

Jonny Guru CX430W Review here!

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=214

I mentioned the review in post 24 already!! :p

The Good:

Quiet
Decent voltage regulation
Fully sleeved cables
Good ripple suppression
Great price

The Bad:

Not as efficient as we would like to see.

The Mediocre:

Use of Chinese Samxon capacitors throughout.
Group regulated design.

From the review:

"Internally, the construction is just average with the group regulated topology and use of Samxcon capacitors. Corsair also only gives this unit a two year warranty. Perhaps thats as long as the Samxon caps last? Value score is a 9."

Also the Jonnyguru hotbox tests were done at 29C to 33C. 30C is the temperature at which the new CX series is rated at unlike the old CX400W which was rated at 40C.

In their other recent PSU reviews the hot box tests were done at between 40C to 60C:

I shoved one in a build I did a little while ago, thought it was a nice psu.

I have been running this PSU since October 2009 and it's superb. It's never missed a beat and comes with a 5 Year warranty too :D They should have continued with this model even if they decided to reduce the Warranty period instead of going with the CX series.

I have used one of these in a 2nd rig since April 2009, it has powered a Q9550 @ 4.0GHz, currently a 750 @ 4.1GHz, along with such graphics cards as ATI 4890, GTX275 and currently ATI HD5850, really good stable quality "budget" PSU...

It is a shame the CX400W is not available anymore. The 400W PSU in my mates computer needs replacing as the fan is going kaput. OTH,the PSU is the main system exhaust(the case has no exhaust fans) so the CX430W does not look like a good choice especially with its sleeve bearing fan and 30C rating.

However, the Silverstone Strider SST-ST40F-ES is around the same price,is rated at 40C,uses a ball bearing fan and is 80+ certified.

Both, seem to use capacitors of a similar quality though.

OTH,perhaps it is worth spending a few quid more on one of Seasonic S12 based 400W units.

Don't like what happened there, overrating a psu and testing at a lower temp to prevent derating dosen't sit well with me. a lot of that supposed 430w is locked up in the 3.3 and 5v and will never be unleashed in a modern rig.

Also seems the CX500 is a DSA450 platform and the CX600 is a DSA500 platform :( Personally won't use these even in my budget builds and if Corsair continues this trend with higher up models it'll be no better than Coolermaster etc.. not going to touch them. Back to Seasonic directly now for the time being :D
