Hi, I am choosing components for a flatmates new build. I've opted for the following (power using) components:
Overclocked phenom bundle
Western Digital Caviar Black
9800GT 65nm until early next year when my flatmate is going to buy a beastly new card.

I am unsure if the TX 650W will be enough for the machine. If not, I will have to go for the TX 750W as the other good options seem to always be out of stock.

It's more than enough, consider getting a HX520 instead.

EDIT: Oh, they don't do HX520 or HX620 anymore. Stick with the TX650, gives you room to upgrade.

I have a Corsair TX 650W and just got another Nvidia GTX280 ... I couldn't connect it up as I didn't have all the power connections I needed on the 650W so I'm looking into upgrading the PSU (if necessary) or finding cable splitters that'll do the job. My worry is that using a cable splitter with the 650W and 2 power hungry cards will not be very clever.

Rest of the system is i7 2.6Ghz, ASUS P6T Deluxe, 1GB SATA HD, 3GB DDR3 (gonna be updrading this to 6 or 9 GB in total) a ASUS DX Sonar sound card, optical drive ... thats it i think.

Could anyone give me advice on firstly the 650W Corsair or secondly recommned a PSU to use with 2 GTX 280s that need a 6 pin and 8pin PCI-E each?

i dont advice using a 650w power supplie even with a good one like corsair, especially if you overclock and with 2 gtx280s
i would recommand a 750-850w one like:

Yeah it does help, thanks :)

I thought that was the route i'd have to take, and I must say I prefer the modular types. I'll have a look at the links you've provided now, I like the look of the Be Quiet ones however.
