Hi i have been changing diffrent parts to suit my needs for quite a while now but the one thing i have never thought of changing is my memory.

Corsair 2gb 6400 XMS2 c4 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-124-CS

Until now, ive seen a few threads about this RAM having two different Revisions one that wont clock at all and the other will clock over 1000mhz as in the review

Anyway has this been sorted out now or is it still hit or miss.

Now ive been looking at the crucial stuff, it being 5300 Memory can it and will it clock over the 800-900 into the 1000mhz zone.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-085-CR

Which one would you say i should be going for providing the Corsair stuff is sorted out.

My system is e6600 and the Bad Axe 2 Motherboard.

Thanks

It's the later revisions that feature the 'inferior' Promos ICs so unless you happen upon an older batch, that is what you'll receive.

I just red a post saying someone got these @975mhz considering they are the Promo ics ones i thought that is the older batch that have the Promo ics? and they arnt very good overclockers?

It's the latest batches that have the Promos ICs.

No one is saying the Promos ICs are terrible just that they are not doing as well a good Micron D9s.
It also seems they're a good deal cheaper to buy for the module manufacturers than the Micron ICs and as such their use on kits (i.e. the Corsair 6400C4) that sell at similar prices to those using D9s makes them worse value for money.

ah lol.

Would anyone be so kind and pointing me to some Good Ram then pretty please?

:)

For under £200 my money would be on the Crucial Ballstix PC2-5300 3-3-3 (£185 + delivery from a competitor) or the Adata Vitesta PC2-6400 4-4-4 Extreme Edition (£180 + delivery from a competitor).

Both use Micron D9 ICs (either D9GMH or D9GCT) and as such offer pretty good value.

For a shade more (and possibly worth the extra for proven o/c performance) then I'd take the Crucial 10th Anniversary PC2-5300 3-3-3 (£211 + delivery from OcUK), Team Xtreem PC2-5300 3-3-3 (£200 + delivery from a competitor) or Team Xtreem PC2-6400 4-4-4 (£206 + delivery from a competitor).
All of which utilise nice bins of Micron D9GMH ICs.

Go for the cheapest DDR 800 RAM that will do 4,4,4,12 guarenteed at stock, or close to stock volts. In real world performance it's not worth paying £100 or more over the top of middle of the road Dimms for such a small increase in performance that the higher end stuff has.

It's a trade off between price/performance as always but it's a steep gradient with DDR2. Middle of the road is more than adequate for most buyers.

Except even basic PC2-6400 value RAM is currently around £150 for a 2GB kit.
£30-40 above that is IMO a reasonable price to pay for more flexibility/headroom as well as possibly improved warranty & technical support, not to mention the all important shiny shiny heatspreaders. ;)

Nobody mentioned heatspreaders. That's a different issue entirely :) . Despite the fact that they make sod all difference to temps or overclocking ability i would gladly pay £100 more for something because it's shiny. We're no different than Magpies in that regard. :p

You are right in saying there's not a lot of difference between some middling Dimms and the cheaper stuff. I paid £300 for C3 Corsair when Geil do adequate C4 RAM for half the price. In real world performance there's not a lot of difference. Not enough to justify the price hike imo.
