I'm going tomorrow as well, I've spent ages reading up on this... There's no right or wrong answer, some people suggest for beginners that shutter speed all the way is the way to go but others swear by aperture mode.
As well as Phal's advice on the Sport pictures thread I think this, quoted from another forum is sound advice;
"Av for jets.
Why? Simple really, you pick an aperture and your camera works out a shutter speed. So, why not use TV? Well, with the glorious weather we have, if you start off at say 1000th Sec, your camera picks say F5.6, as it's a bit sunny, all is good. Trouble is, when your plane gets to half way down it's high speed run, ops, the suns gone in. You have specified 1000th/sec, and your camera cannot deliver the required aperture, which has become say F4 Ops, no F4 on your lens zoomed out to 400mm. At that point Huston, you have a problem. If you're lucky you'll notice, if not you get the wrong exposure.
By using AV, you pick, F8 for example, and you get say 1/800th as a shutter speed. Sun goes in and you still have the F8, and a shutter speed of 1/500th. All is good you still get a perfect exposure. Yes, you might run out of fast shutter speeds, but with IS you can get away with that usually.
With props, its not so much of a problem, unless its really dull, using TV, you specify say 1/250th, you're not likely to run out of apertures."
My Optex rain cover arrived this morning, as well as two more 32 gb Sandisk extreme pro cards, that'll give me 128gb worth of memory, hopefully it's enough, will be shooting in RAW.
For Camera settings, so far, what I've gleaned from the Internet is that it's a good idea to use centre focus point and AI Servo mode, to keep the moving target continuously in focus whilst tracking, and then fire away in continuous shooting.
Exposure balance set to +1 or +1.5
Metering I'm not too sure about, spot?
Any other tips would be great.
