Cost of living

Starves??? think about it - when your feeding that many people you can buy stuff in larger quantities usually saving money, its much easier to cook cheaply to feed a larger number, etc. £280 is ample for a family of 4 if you don't eat out every other day.

It's just 4 people, he doesn't get volume discounts for a family of 4. :D
Simple exercise - take £2.25 to supermarket and try to create 3 meals for yourself. Now take £9 and try to come up with 3 meals for 4. Did it get any easier or are we all still eating cornflakes and frozen broccoli soup all week?

Are you fat?

Overweight, yes. I see where you're pointing, but no, in my case it's the sitting lifestyle and no opportunity to burn calories. I don't eat massive portions, certainly not big enough to overtake eatcustard's family of 4 in their lunch budget. I know my way around kitchen, use a lot of veg from my garden, bake my own bread etc. Still, if I was to cut my food budget to what people come up with here - I would probably have to eat beans, cornflakes and pasta all week.

My mum used to feed 7 of us for about £280 a month - granted it was a few years back - none of us starved or were even close to it, 3 proper meals a day + snacks, etc.

You can do things like buying big bags of potatoes and whole chickens, etc. when your feeding that number which easily does dinner for 2-3 days.

EDIT: Granted she did do a lot of cooking - enough ingredients for making 10 cakes is probably cheaper than buying one ready made.

I eat for a month on £70, so thats £2.30 per day. And I don't eat just bread and bargain beans. If you get a lot of stock foods you can last fine. Big sack of Potatoes, 30 eggs for £2 from the local market, Sack of Rice from Chinatown. Really is'nt that hard ...

Prove it. Set budget of £63 a week, go to any supermarket page of your choice and do 7 day shipping for 3 meals a day. No cheating, no "sandwiches for lunch", proper portions etc. Let's see what people eat for their money.

No sandwiches for lunch . That is all i ever eat for lunch! Cereal for breakfast, sandwich for lunch and then a main meal.

There is no two ways about, £280 is a lot of money for one person to spend on food in a month. Even half of that is still probably too much, and more than what most people spend.

I spend that in a Month at Asda, you want to see my shopping list? I've been eating like that for the past year ...

If you consider that you can do a spaghetti bolognese, chilli etc for under around £1 per portion, freeze it etc - adding rice/pasta brings it barely over £1 a meal. Most pasta dishes and things like stir fry can be done very cheaply. I'd bet it's surprising how little you can get by on, and not badly either. Of course if your idea of a meal every night is scallops followed pork medallions with dauphinoise potatoes, you'll struggle with a limited budget. Simple meals every night and a treat at the weekend is a sacrafice worth making for your own space IMO.

How is sandwiches for lunch cheating? It's a perfectly good lunch for many people, especially those who work 9-5?

It's not lunch, it's sandwiches. It's something your mum puts in your school bag for you to throw at your mates during food fight in gym locker. My god, it's almost like Jamie Oliver did all of those lunch tv series for nothing. You say "let's go to lunch" and all young people see in their head is a bag of pale untoasted hovis and jar of jam. ;)

All I'm saying is - schools can't do it, prison service can't manage it, hospitals struggle to do feed small kids at those prices, but we have people claiming entire families go by on few farthings a day. Although, I gotta tell you, the whole "what do you mean by no sandwiches for lunch" outrage starts to explain few things...

So you whip out your pans and chopping board at the office then

You can't compare insitutions like that to feeding a family - even with buying in bulk they are usually dealing with contractors, etc. less in the way of keeping left overs in the fridge - a lot more gets scrapped, etc.
