Any ideas on the cost of vista when its released?

also i know microsoft give discounts on XP if your a student, will they do the same for vista?

Your guess is as good as mine right now, and my guess is that they'll use similar price points to those already in use for XP.

Microsoft are onto a good thing with Vista! They could potentialy charge whatever they like, safe in the knowledge that people will have to buy it eventually if they want to fully utilise that brand spanking new PC they've just brought!

I'm guessing around the £150 mark for the Ultimate edition down to around £85 for the bog standard.

Well that's what XP Pro was back in the day. I don't remember prices of 2000 and 98 but I'm guessing they were similar.

The full (retail, non-upgrade) version of Windows XP Pro still costs £230 or so, I would guess that Vista Ultimate would be around there (£250 to £300 really) - with a discount on the upgraded version. It will be a while until the grey market OEM copies start to float around.

if they have any sense they will release it at a cheaper price to enable the transition from XP to Vista to happen a lot faster. But it is usually all about the money!

Seeing some crazy prices being quoted here.
The core home user Vista product (the version that in 95% of cases is actually just what the user needs, nothing more, nothing less) should be priced at around the same as the WinXP Home Upgrade is £85 - £90
Slightly more advanced version which will cover the other 5% of home users should be priced around the WinXP Pro Upgrade price - £150 - £160

The "real" price of Windows has not really increased since the release of Windows 95 (inflation and assuming Retail Upgrades purchased for like-for-like versions).
Not bad for a monopoly - the real price of a product not really increasing over the past 12 years.

I'll probly buy when I can afford a new machine to make the upgrade woth it!!...

So in about 10 years the way my bank account looks! :(

I was under the impression that us gamers would need the high end version of vista?

some interesting comments there!

I think i'll buy the Vista equivilant to XP pro when its released on a student licence so hopefully it will save me some costs.

Need to be able to not only use the uni network properly, but also play some games and do my coursework of course!
