Could I have a bit of C&C on this one please?

Been into photography for nearly a year and I'm very slowly learning with my Fuji S6500fd.

I've posted a few shots on here before, but not very many to be honest as my shots pail into insignificance when compared to others on here.

I've promised myself I would put more shots up on OcUK as it's always good to get C&C, good or bad.

This is one of my latest shots. Not terribly exciting, but I've tried to make it a bit more interesting by playing with the shadow intensity, midtone contrast and sharpness.

Thanks in advance.

Very nice, I like the composition and the depth of field, as both help creating a strong focal point in the middle of the flower. I might be tempted to crop it slightly to move the middle of the flower up and right a bit, but only if I was being picky. Great work :)

I like the shot and pp mostly but think you have overcooked the white a bit and it looks blown, esp at the 10 o'clock position. There are quite a few flower togs at the TP forums if you want some more expert opinion.

I really like the processing, bar the blown highlights as freebooter mentioned.

Compositionally, the flower is a bit central. I think the depth of field could be a tiny bit deeper as it looks like the petals around 10-11 of the clock are out of focus, really only half or a whole stop, nothing more but just a bit extra.

Finally I'm not too keen on the large dark background at the top. I think it should either all be grass with some nice bokeh, or maybe make it more like a studio show with a totally black background and a sharp subject.

They really are only little niggles though as I'm trying to be picky. I think there's plenty of potential there.

On a different note, never avoid posting your pics because you think they pale in comparison to others posted on here. Everyone has to start somewhere and it's great for the rest of us to see other peoples work.

I actually find critiquing other peoples work quite challenging because it makes me question how I would have taken the same shot, and it also makes me question my own shots in more detail.

Bang on with that comment the whole point of critiquing others work is not just to help them develope it assist your own skill by being able to judge an image better and then allowing you to do the same to your shots as you shoot them lets you look through the view finder and critique what you see before you even shoot it!

As for the flower its composed well and the processing is almost there if you could recover some of the detail back in the petals id say it would be almost spot on.

I really like the picture and i know from having that camera that DOF is not always the easiest to get - did you shoot it on the macro mode?
Apart from the slightly overblown highlights which everyone has pointed out its a really nice picture and the innocence comes to mind for some reason?

Centre of the flower - nice and clear, petals coming towards me, very nice also, petals going away, over white and blurrly. Dont like the dark bit behind the flower as it keeps dragging my eye away from the flower.

At the 4 oclock in the picture is a green shoot, with a very whiteish top, make that green as it drags your eye away too.

As a shot id say its dam good, just a few little niggles is all, keep up the fine and good work mate!! and remeber, all C&C is one persons views, nothing personal.

Thanks a lot for you comments guys.

I see exactly what you mean about the composition and that blown out petals. I shall dig out the original and have a play around with that at some point, although I've a funny feeling that the petals are blown on the original as well!

Thanks again :)
