was watching a compilation of his goals, as great a player as he is could he ever score an elegent curler or a goal or were they all just power drives!

He was a professional footballer, of course he could bend the ball.

He was also one of Englands greatest ever strikers so I don't really feel the need to pick holes in his game. ;)

the quickest point from A to B (foot to goal) is a straight line. why waste time by curling the ball?

give yourself more time to score again and just bang it in the back of the net.

Maybe thats what all these new players are missing! Shearer used to wack the thing as hard as possible from a to b in a straight line, all these players now days tend to place and curl them giving keepers soo much time to save the shot!!! Learn the are of being able to wack the ball into the net as hard as you can in a straight line = goals!!!

Defoe is exactly the same. Watch him ,he never tries to place the ball or curl or whatever, he just smacks it with as much power as he can muster.

Can be annoying as it means he misses seemingly easy chances because he hits the ball hard when a tap-in would be better. All the ball needs to do is clip something, like a keepers ankle or defenders knee, at that speed and the ball deflects all over the place. Final minutes in the Chelsea game at 3-3 for example when he nearly broke the crossbar, a neat finish would have won us the game.

Though it does mean he scores some cracking goals.

Shearer didn't do a lot of things with the ball, he didn't bend it or caress it or dribble with it he just did the most important things better than most. Flick on's, headers, volleys and bullet shots!

Unless you watched him week-in, week-out, you probably wouldn't know that for years he was the second best crosser of the ball at Newcastle United behind Nobby Solano. Check out Les Ferdinand's goal against Manchester United in the 5-0. Sheer class.

And yes, he could bend a ball, but the man could fling a ball at 70mph with barely any backlift - he didn't need to. Leave the bending to people like Beckham

However, if you insist on seeing him bend a ball, check out his first ever Newcastle goal, a free kick against Wimbledon - I was sitting right behind the goal and can remember it clear as day - top corner, inch perfect :)

wasnt his first goal for blackburn a bender?

No, that was his first room mate for away games. Graeme Le Saux :p

Shearer didn't need to bend it. He could though if needs be, for example his first goal for Newcastle. He wouldn't have been Shearer if he didn't go clean through and just smash it though..

shezza and hasslebaink were just pure POWER playas!

Can't help think of Tony Yeboah, only because of THAT goal and another, but was he that type of player? Been trying to remember for ages and can't. :(

His thighs would say he was, they were huge.

Yeboah was a power player also, played like Hasselbaink, just pure power. Scored two goals of the best goals ever in the Prem whilst at Leeds.

Ian Wright scored lots of goals without much backlift too, but he was a more complete player than smacking it as hard as possible.

Yeboah was a power player, but he wasn't accurate enough.

Though Liverpool and Wimbledon goals say different :D
