I have just ordered a Conroe 6600 and a Abit Max (cant quite remember the name of it yet!!) and I have the following hardware at the moment:

AMD AM2 4600+ CPU - retail fan V=1.625 11x264 (bios)
Zalman 9500 heatsink
Abit KN9 Ultra motherboard - latest Nforce drivers
Geil 2Gb PC6400 800Mhz V=2.2 @ 800 @ Cas 5 5-5-15 2T
HIS X1900 XT @ 650/750 (XTX Speed) - Cat 6.7 used
Raptor 74Gb HD (Win XP Part. 15Gb Games 54Gb)
Pioneer DVD-RW
Floppy Drive
Using onboard sound
Coolermaster Stacker Case (810 model)
OC Z Mod Stream 520W PSU

Gonna swap out the AMD X2 and the Abit board and put the Conroe and Abit in its place. I'm hoping I can still use the Zalman 9500 cooler as it does cool down very well, but I'm interested in how to overclock the Conroe?

I've never owned a Intel setup before so I'd really appreaite some help overclocking it if anyone wouldnt mind lending a hand

I'm on MSN, Yahoo and even AIM so if anyone was willing to chat and give me a hand getting the most from it, I would be most greatful

Wont be getting it till the 5th January, so I have plenty of time to read up on it and learn a bit I guess :)

Hope you've had a great Christmas and everyone is gonna have a great New Year :) Many thanks again :)

the conroes love to be overclocked. if you wnat small overclock like i went from 2.67 to 3.3ghz then it only required fsb increase on my abit aw9dmax boarrd. no voltage changes were required

I'd love to gain about a 1Ghz overclock on my Conroe, if I could get 50% that would be even better again, but I guess its all down to bragging rights at the end of the day..

I just want it to work overall, be fast, stable and not give me the headaches that this AM2 setup has given me with overclocking... I have to wonder now, whether or not it will turn on each time I turn the PC on.. As sometimes it doesnt post at all even when its been fine the previous evening :( How annoying is that?!

that is very annoying. well like i said i got a 600mhz increase with only a fsb change and its nice and stable :) i havent even tried to get more but am sure its possible with out to much effort.

If I can get 3Ghz on stock voltages I'll be very pleased, if I can manage 3.6Ghz I'll be even more pleased. I guess its a case of how far I want to go and how far I can be bothered to go...

I just want a working system!!

3.2 on stock vCore is easy with the CPU-mobo combi you have, just push the FSB up 355. You would be advised to get yourself a CPU cooler, the stock cooler is okay but if your going to push the thing then better cooling is recomended.

I was gonna ask, is the Zalman 9500 cooler gonna fit onto the intel board I have or has that been just a waste of £34??

How would the temps be at 3.2Ghz? I try to aim to keep them below 50C, is that ok or can I take it a little higher?

the zalman should have attachements/clips for socket 775 too, check the zalmans box and/or manual...

( as under specs it says its for s775 too)

Unless you have the grey am2 version, then you cant... ( sry this came in an edit, just renembered there were 2 9500 versions)

As far as I know the CNPS9500 LED & CNPS9500 AT (copper-orange version) are compatible with the C2D.

The CNPS9500 AM2 (grey-black version) is not

at 3.2 your idle temps will most probably be between 40-46deg C, may also be better. Under load you would see around 63. I have just tested for you, but remember my central heating is on full blast at present. (damn auto timer)

I have found that the Tuniq Tower 120 or the top end Scythe's get the best results.

With my AM2 when it was clocked at 2.92Ghz under a full load it wasnt breaking 2.9Ghz with a 1.65vcore (just as a comparison) it was under a full load no more than 50C.. I have a screen shot below showing this :-

Sorry my mistake,
Programs like Everest & SpeedFan take temp readings from the mobo sensors. with Everest you would see temps close to 40deg C with the E6600 on load.
The temps I quoted are from CoreTemp & Intel TAT programs, these read the temps from the CPUs internal core sensors.

This is a pic of the cooler:

Am I out of luck??

As for the cooler there is no easy way to put it... Yes
But have a look around there maybe some adapters or something you could get

Well thats a bummer, perhaps I should try and find a different cooler for the Intel system then?

Shame that... Thought it might fit....
