Hi,

I have no idea about ADSL and how it works etc. I got my new router this morning and its givern me some stats about my line. Could some go over it and tell me whats what and if that stats are good?

thanks!!!!

Right - here we go...

Your attenuation is quite high at 54, indicating you have a long line in terms of distance from your exchange to your house..this is not very good as you could probably only get around 4-5 mbit on your line :(

Your SNR is poor as well 16.8 is quite low it should be around 30+. This is caused by poor wiring or interferance...Plug your router master socket and see if your SNR margin is better. If you have a NTE5 face plate, remove it and try the test socket. If you don't have a NTE5 faceplate, you could try the ringwire trick which basically involves removing a wire from terminal 3(ask me for more detail if you need it). Also can you tell me what speed your connected at at the moment?

Hope this helps:)

they're ok but the CRC errors and loss of signal 4 times would concern me a bit. High attenuation can cause those but given your in essex could just be the crappy local loop. I have a dodgy A end to a leased line in essex some of the loacal loops suck.

Im with bulldog with 1mbps

Thats the highest speed I can get atm, Im hoping when Maxdsl comes out I will get more of a boost.

Cool, im with Bully's 8mbps :D. You need to try to improve your SNR but trying a test socket or master socket if the routers not already there :)

If you can only get 1meg then you can only get 1 meg possibly 2 meg. You can pay for MaxDSL but you'll still not get any faster than your max service. (1 or 2 Mbit)

Well currently its on a 15meter extension lead running from upstairs socket, this is the 2nd socket but not the main one that enters the house, thats downstairs.

The extension lead goes into the office under the floor then my modem goes in.

I've read somewhere that Im not allowed to replace the bT socket. which one is that the first socket that enters the house or is it the other wall sockets?

cheers

How could I test that?

My routers a wired version and I dont have a lappy

you can replace what you like. The one that counts is the first one, called the master socket. I'm sure you can replace it if you want tho. 15m won't do an awful lot to your stats though as it's 15m on the end of a couple of Km so less than 1% overall probably.

The extension thing is one of those telephone reels from the A goose shop.

If I manage to get my computer near the master socket and test the router would it knock a lot off my stats?
Also my master socket only has a phone socket and as im not illegaly aloud to change it how much would you reckon BT would cost to replace it with one of these fancy NTE5 boxes

It depends on the quality of the extension cable - with a marginal line, 15m of dodgy cable could be all you need to make a big difference.

Is there any decent telephone cable out there? or is it something cat5e cable could do?

cheers

I think I've said this to you before, but that routers alright but better, more expensive routers will give better performance.

Errors are pretty low, but 4 losses of signal is a bit high.

Cat5 with RJ11s on both ends would be perfect. You might see no improvement though.

yeh, you could use a mates pc and connect the router to a master socket, then login remotely to see if it would make a difference.

Mine -

thanks for the replies,

I will see if I can get some cable and have a go at making my own cable and borrow mates pc

Right Ive managed to connect my router to the upstairs extension without the 15m telephone extension wire. Here are my new stats.

Lots of you post doesnt make sense im afraid.

On that line, using online calculators he would be lucky to get a stable 3mbit connection.

"Your SNR is poor as well 16.8 is quite low it should be around 30+."

What the hell? Only on the shortest best quality lines would you get 30db of SNR. 16.8 is actually good for a 54db line. A few DB have been gained by loosing the extension cable to make 20db - fantastic for 54db attenuation.

hmm, what sort of stat would I basically need to get 2mb internet?

just so it gives me a rough idea?

cheers
