Yes I agree Pepsilol, but I really couldn't care less, it looks absolutely fine in person.

One of the front quarter panels has been re-sprayed too. (you can tell from the paint lip on the inside of the wing) Oh the horror!

One of the front windows is also a tiny bit loose in its runners. Oh the drama!

One of the headlights has gone a bit cloudy. Oh lawdy lawd!

There is a bit of curbing on one of the alloys. Oh sweet Jesus save us!

There are some stone chips on the bonnet. Oh ****!

One of the window rubbers needs replacing. Oh my heart!

:D

Sorry, I understood what you meant. :p

Despite the few little niggles, it is a very tidy car for the money, and despite the few little things I've uncovered, I'm still happy with what I paid for it. I did after all buy it fully expecting it to need a little bit of work!

Project for next weekend, getting a wire brush/some sandpaper to those hubs and calipers, and painting them with high temperature silver paint, and also finally do that headlight restoration.

Would a hum/whirring sound which is affected by wheel speed (not engine speed, gear speed etc) and isn't affected by depressing the clutch, or putting it in neutral, be tire noise? Wheel bearing noise?

I only really started noticing it after having my new tyres fitted... Might be because they are bedding in? Don't really want to have to replace wheel bearing(s) too! :p

It is most noticable at 40 - 50MPH or so.

Tracking was done by a place that knows what theyre doing with lasers and fancy things  No printout though.

The wheels were balanced properly as well as far as I'm aware, with a proper wheel balancing machine that tells you where to put the weights.

The car used to judder over about 80MPH on my private airstrip before I had the tyres and tracking done, but now it is silky smooth all the way up to 120MPH on my private airstrip, so I don't think its that really. :p

Its not a vibration or juddering, just a noise. I've watched "wheel bearing noise" videos online and those noises are totally different.

Couldn't be the flywheel could it? Do they whine?

May well be alignment though. Have you checked he pressures too? They could just be noisy tyres but having them all pointing in the same direction helps

Flywheel wouldn't make a noise in conjunction with road speed - it's attached to the engine!

Haha I knew that. Not sure why I put that suggestion forward, its like I forgot what I already said. :p

Pressures are all fine, 2.2 bar in each tyre, which is the correct pressure.

I've had my tracking done at this place a few times and never had a printout, I asked before they started and they said they don't do them. I'm pretty sure it is fine. The tyre fitting place is iffy though, so wheel balancing being out is possible, though I'm not sure how they would manage it as they have machines which literally tell them exactly where to put the weights! :p

Tracking and alignment gets done here: http://www.setyres.com/
Tyre fitting and balancing gets done by a part worn place on the local industrial estate, simply because they are friendly and just down the road, and seem to do a proper job with the proper tools. (to clarify, the tyres I got them to fit were the new ones which I provided)

Could wheel balancing make this strange oscilating humming noise though? I thought it would just cause vibration?

Any recommendations for oil, all? :)

I have no experience/personal preference with regard to oil. With the Polo I just used the same VW/Audi stuff as Dad did in his A6.

People seem to recommend Mobil 1 5W30, but some others recommend 10W40 because it smooths the engine out a bit and reduces the idle clatter, and some others are even using 0W40?

Should I get some good quality 10W40? Middle of the road?

Looking at this: https://www.motul.com/us/en-US/products/oils-lubricants/6100-synergie-10w40?

Setyres do have hunter equipment - the Brighton and Hove one certainly does - which I think is his nearest ;)

Nah there is one closer to me than that, in Lancing/Shoreham. I don't think they have hunter equipment? He did mention that for a "posh" tracking and alignment with a printout, I'd have to go to the Brighton one.

The Worthing seafront one? Or is there one near the Brooklands industrial estate? Yeah I took the Evo to the Brighton one when I lived nearby, although unfortunately it didn't (and still doesn't) have enough camber adjustment, so it sits at 2 degrees which is killing my tyres :(

Well the seafront one is quite close to the Brooklands industrial estate, so to eliminate any doubt, it is this one! :p

Looks like it should be 5W40. The manual should tell you the correct grade.

I don't have a manual, just the log book and a V5. :p

This stuff looks good. How important is it that it meets the exact manufacturer oil grade (API SL-EC or ILSAC), as that one doesn't: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-68976-s...thetic-engine-oil-recommended-by-ferrari.aspx

This one does however, though it is more expensive and doesn't have the free litre? http://www.opieoils.co.uk/pv-98318-...?vehicleid=4732&yearfilter=2005&FitmentNotes=

5W40 is the correct viscosity, but would I be better with 10W40 as it is an 84,000 mile engine which will be driven fairly hard at times?
