just a little advice needed folks

1 - which bios is best for clocking with the bad axe? latest?

A - from XS - BIOS - 1334 (latest). gives some folks a decent boost in their clocking (even those without mods) info here

2 - i found a prog to replace clockgen, which monitoring s/w to use tho - i use smartguardian at the mo

A - ???

3 - what's the max safe voltage/temp for a conroe? i never went above 1.7v with my X2 on air, and never above 40C

A - ???

4 - sata ports, the bad axe has 8. Sil and intels matrix ones. which would be better to use for 4 raptors in raid 0? i.e with my DFI NF4 - the nforce ones were better than the Sil

A - black Intel ports are better (ta shodan)

5 - RAM, any probs with the bad axe running 4x1GB sticks with clocking? i know the nforce mobos werent keen on this.

A - ???

p.s. i've heard some mobos, like the asus one, doesnt support conroe out of the box without a bios upgrade so people have had to rush out to buy a P-D to be able to use the thing. does this happen with rev 304 of the bad axe?

sorry about the Q's. :P

i found clockgen to worked fine with my bad axe when i had one.
There is some intel monitoring software on the CD though it seemed a bit buggy to me.

I dont think anyone knows what the safe max voltage is atm. Some people have used 1.6v on air but there temps must be sky high, though they never run anything stressfull like prime or S&M.
With 1.45v, im hitting 60 deg on duel prime with water, these things get very hot with extra volts
I see though you have used 1.7v on X2 where I wouldnt have gone over 1.55, how did you keep your temps below 40deg ?

As for the bios, if your getting a X6800 then the latest bios would be good i guess as the overlocking options are unlocked with the X6800. Any other conroe and you will have to the pen mod to unlock the bios or find one of the custom bios' which do they same.

I can help with Q4 I think.

I believe the Intel Matrix SATA ports are 3Gb/s (black)

The Sil ones are only 1.5Gb/s (blue)

cant wait to see how much of a diff it makes to loading maps :D

will also update the 1st post with the answers in case anyone else has the same Qs in the future :o

Everyone who mentions them says raptors in Raid 0 are astonishingly fast.

I decided to get a little 36gb one to act as an OS drive.

i have that in another pc. 2 seperate 36 gigs. after i get my conroe, those 2 will be raided for a OS drive

the 36 gig raptors are not for conroe, those will be for my 4400+ X2

the 4x74GB raptors will be the OS and game drive. backed up of course (minus the games as they are huuuuuge at the mo) - gotta love acronis! :)

trying to figure out what to do with the swap file tho. put it on the raided raptor partition by itself or on a seperate raided drive?

which conroe chip did you get shodan?

I've ordered the 6600. The faster ones would make me haemorrhage too much money.

I don't know much about swap files. Never designated a partition or drive for one. Would it give you significant benefits? How much disk space does it need? Might partition some space on my 36gb raptor. Not even vista will need all that space.

Sounds like you've got a nice 2nd system. The rig I'm on at the mo is ancient:

Athlon 1900XP
ECS K7S5A
Geforce 4 Ti4200 64MB
1 GB Crucial

So I'm hoping to be blown away by my conroe!

yeah, at the mo i have 2 X2s but am selling the 3800+ one to a mate to fund the cost of the new conroe bits

it will partially be a CS source server tho :D

as for the swap file i think i will put it on the raptors due to the speed so when my swap file is hit - it wont be as bad as on a single drive. looking forward to this now :o

Will you put the swap file in its own partition?

Would love to give CS source and HL2 a try but I have an unnatural aversion to 'steam'. Had Condition Zero and hated having to use it.

i've heard loads of bad things n steam, but it worked fine with 0 probs so far for me,

i think i will put the swap file on its own partition just for tidyness tbh
