when applying for a job and the ask for current CV with accompanying cover letter, what do they expect? i mean most things are covered in my CV which is pretty damn good, just what the hell do you put in the cover letter?

''hi, heres my CV.''

??

stu

If "everything" is covered in your CV then you're doing something wrong.

Your CV should be your skills + experience, tailored towards the position. The covering letter should be a little about why you actually want the position specifically.

yeah, thats what it does cover. with a short paragraph about hobbies/interests. actually about 4 lines.

the ''why'' fills the gap tho.

thanks :)

edit:

how long should it be? at the moment it stands at about 100 words?

Obviously expand it out a bit, but just highlight a few key points that are relevant to the job in hand so that they raise an eyebrow and look at your CV with anticipation...

ditto

your covering letter should be why you want the job and how you are suited for the job, try mentioning some of the things in there job ad etc..

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you in relation to the graduate job advertised on the [source] website. I am a recent graduate from [university] attaining a 2.1 in [subject] and I am very interested in this position with [company]. I believe I would be very much suitable for the position and that [company] can teach me the business side of programming which is what I am keen to gain experience in.

Software programming using a variety of languages and producing end results with the use of programming was my greatest joy whilst at university. My enthusiasm was further amplified with the decision to base my third year project on a programming assignment which illustrates my passion of programming well.

Whilst on my degree course I have had various roles of responsibility from managing small projects to representing other students on the course, and my experience and confidence has grown to an exceptional level which I believe would be vital for an [job title] at [company].

Enclosed is my CV which gives further details of my achievements.

I look forward to hearing from you soon regarding graduate opportunities with [company].

Yours faithfully
