Ok,
so i can manage my 2.60ghz amd athlon X2 5000+ to 3.25Ghz but its far from stable, it will load simple word processing stuff, but as soon as you run games it gets BSOD and dumps physical memory to disk.
I only run the 2.6ghz chip at 2.95ghz and its stable.

My question is what is the safe percentage most cpu's can be overclocked without errors?
I know i've seen phenoms overclocked to 6.5ghz from 3/4ghz using liquid nitrogen but theoretically if they had an unlimited endless amount of liquid nitrogen would it be stable since i can only get about 30% more use out of my cpu before it becomes unstable.

mainly im speaking about AMD cpu's but feel free to include intel as well :)

Most Intel Core i7 920 (D0 stepping) CPUs happily overclock from 2.66GHz to 4GHz with a decent air cooler. That's 50%, and not a particularly difficult overclock. I have mine running at 3.6GHz 24/7 due to lower noise.

Yep, its a rare i7920 DO that wont hit 4ghz, also as Danny has mentioned it can depend on the board and cpu you have, for instance i had a q6600 that wouldnt go over 3.0ghz for love nor money on an nforce 680i motherboard, put the same cpu into an asus p5q deluxe p45 board, 3.8ghz wih relative ease.

i get you, i have an asus m2n4-sli board right now and its pretty good with overclocking i think im getting the max out of this CPU without changing the whole board again, and if i do that gunna get myself an AM3 board.

Every cpu now matter if from intel or amd will have a limit, as you can only put so much vcore through them, and also so much FSB through the mobo's, 9 times outa 10 its allways mobo limited really as u will reach the fsb wall well before the cooling limit is reached.

Yep same thing, Quad last week 3.2 on its arse every 5 mins @3.2 asus striker motherboard same CPU on a Giga mobo 3.5 solid 5 hours Prime

You pays your £££ you takes your chance :)

Yep, thankfully the 680i died on me, was a great dual clocking board though, 3.7ghz from an E6600. Switched to the p5q, 3.8ghz on both a q6600 and a q9550 on air, 9550 would have went a lot higher but i sold that chip and board to fund my i7 rig.

some e21*0 could get over 100% overclock and quite a few of them as well. There were plenty of 1.6ghz e2140s running at 3.4ghz
