Hi two CDs which I have put a load of family pictures on have got split in half when they were sat on. Is there anything I can do to repair these at all?

I'm afraid not. You've lost your photos sorry to say :(

/thread hijack. Nice to see someone from 3d Buzz. I have the same name there but I rarely post, I mainly stalk the forums ;)

/topic back on track

I am sorry to say that I doubt there is anything that you can do. MAYBE some professional data recovery firm may be able to do something (I have no clue) but be prepared to pay for the service... (quite a bit so I hear).

what id try to do is put it on a 100% perfectly flat surface so that the split bit are totally aligned then glue the other side lol.

worth a shot if you want to risc nackering a dvd drive :P

Problem is you've definitely lost a fair bit of data either side of the crack, I don't know what scale individual pits/grooves are, but there's bound to be a fair few across the width of the crack which are unreadable.

Thanks for the replies - I appreciate your advice/opinions :)

I will try the glue method I think as a final shot before I accept they are gone :(

I will let you know the results .....

Use a really slow CDROM drive: Your modern 40x reader'll just tear them apart, possibly damaging itself in the process.

I don't want to sound like a naysayer but with a damaged table of contents I'll be surprised if the disc can be read at all :(

Sounds like you may have more luck trying to recover them from your hard drive using getdataback or some such program.

On my hard drive which I was in the process of formatting and restoring :(

Try using Restorer2000, I've used that to restore so much old data, I found an old HD from 2000 which seemed to be useless, used that and it managed to find some old "candid" pics of an ex ;)

Good luck trying to align the CD tracks - IIRC they're pitched at 1.6 microns!

err i believe those are his back ups

what sarcasm does't work any more?

To be more helpful... don`t fill up the drive, preferably don`t put anything on the drive because you may be able to send it away and have the contents retrieved... hopefully including your photos. If your photos aren't worth the expense you could try yourself but with software available to the public you have a lower success rate.
