I'd certainly tell them as the police are aware and involved. I've no idea if insurers get a feed of data from the police but in todays information age it wouldn't surprise me if insurers did pay for such data. So if you don't tell them then you risk a future claim being rejected which may cause further issues down the line.
But as for whether to claim then that depends on how much the car is worth.
Personally I'd probably claim. It's just easier in this situation as you can't be sure that some other costs won't come out of the woodwork (e.g. car storage costs, a further recovery to a scrap yard, etc).
