Hi all, has anyone with experience recently used these online credit reports such as experian in the UK?

Are they safe, and are they easy to cancel the memberships?

Do they show you a score and whether you have good or bad history, do they show individual companies that you've had debt with etc..

Thanks people

I've subscribed to Experian (Credit Expert) and Equifax for a number of years.
I managed to get myself into a hell hole of debt about 10 years ago and spent a number of years sorting it. I keep the subscriptions going as an anti fraud measure.

I used to subscribe to CallCredit too, but now no-one I'm with appears to use them so I let it lapse.

I believe you are entitled to a free annual credit report. You could get a free report every 4 months. One from Experian one from Equifax and another from Callcredit. Saves having to sign up to anything.

Thanks, I went into the bank earlier and the lady advised on using a credit checker service, she said not to enter in the long bank card number, but it seems experian, callcredit are asking for this number.

The site says its to validate who i am, but the women in the bank said all i should need is sort code and account number?

Thanks

I see experian has a free 30 day trial period which i was going to use, but then wondered why they need the long card number from my card, when apparently they only need sort code and account number?

Yes, Experian take your cc details when you sign up for the free trial and they will charge you if you don't cancel before your free trial ends.

It's not too awkward to cancel, but when I cancelled they tried to sell me a few things :p

So you did enter the long 16 digit number, and the 3 digit number on the back of the card?

The reason I am weary is, a year ago i registered to a free site, entered my bank details, and didn't realise they were trying to charge me each month, on the account i no longer used. (my fault for not un-ticking a small box which subscribed me to a third party company)

All i want to do, is check my score, check which companies have rated me bad etc all with the free trial, then cancel it at the end.

Thanks for answers

This is exactly what I did last week. I used Experian and you have to put in your card details when you sign up but when you've had enough just ring up and ask to cancel the free trial which they did for me in minutes, no questions asked.

thanks justin, did the free trial show you your score and people you have had debt with or companies that you owe(d) money to?

Thanks!

The score experian shows you is their score. It's not necessarily used by anyone how you may want to obtain credit from. Many lenders create their own credit score based on the raw data that they obtain from Experian or Equifax. That said its a useful indicator of whether you are likely to be deemed credit worthy or not.
