Hello all,

I'm going on holiday next week until the end of June. When I get back I might be able to upgrade my PC (motherboard, RAM, processor) or I might have to wait two weeks until I get paid again).

Do you reckon the Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz will have come down in price a bit by then or should I go ahead and buy it on the weeks special atm?

Memory seems to be hard to predict with random ups and downs - I would say the RAM will stay at its current prices for a bit, but not very long as it seems to be getting snapped up quickly - especially that stuff you mentioned. :)

Sorry to butt in but which would give better performance in General use, gaming and overclocking.

Crucial Ballistix 2GB DDR2 PC2-8500C5

or

OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-5400C5 Dual Channel Vista Upgrade Gold Series DDR2

Is 4GB really worth it?

I don't overclock so I'll let someone answer which one would be best.

However, I don't believe 4GB is needed yet. I had 4GB in my system and I'm now selling 2GB because it's just not needed.

Vista may justify it - but as far as I'm concerned it'll be a while before I put additional RAM in my system.

Is the Crucial Ballistix really needed. I.e. would there be a big difference between the GeIL and Crucial performance wise?

I've heard that Vista is hardly worth bothering with unless you have 4Gb, but XP can't even use it all so I wouldn't bother unless you're going over to Vista.

That's not correct. 32-Bit XP can only show 3.25GB of it, but XP 64 can show and make use of the whole 4GB and more.

As for not bothering with Vista without 4GB, I don't think that's necessarily true either - although 4GB will probably be the 'sweet spot' for the Operating System a little later down the line.

So you reckon its worth going for the 4GB Ram to future proof myself? Im hoping the computer will last me a while and will be looking to play Crysis in the future with this sort of spec:

E6600
R600 or 8800GTX
2gb of theBallistix or the 4GB OCZ

It's a tough one, RAM is pretty cheap right now but I doubt you'll actually sink into the latter 2GB if you do get a 4GB set.

Later you will do, but now, I would say not to.

If you can improve something now with the money spared (by going with 2GB) then do that, but if not then you could just future proof your computer now - although as I said it probably won't be used currently.
