Cruise ship holidays - anyone been on one?

My parent's went on a cruise last year with Cunard, on board the Queen Mary 2. Flew to NY and then it sailed from NY down to the Caribbean for a few weeks. They loved it. They said there was always lots to do, and the staff were excellent. The ship was beautiful and they had an awesome holiday. Though I think it was very expensive.

Though by the end of the trip, my mum did say that she remembered why she divorced my dad! Being with each other for so long could cause tension I guess.

Because my mum wasn't a 'Mrs' (as they were divorced) the company thought they were newly-weds and bumped them up to their honeymoon package. This resulted in them getting a wedding cake one night at their table, and some other goodies, which was awkward for them being divorcees but it was laughed off with the other guests and the free cake and bubbly was well and truly got through I believe!

I'm 52 and I'm too young to go on a cruise yet.

I did go on a Nile cruise in April and that was awesome.

You confuse me.

I went on a Royal Caribbean cruise from Port of Miami to Mexico, Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Haiti.

Whilst everyone thinks they are for 'old' people trust me they are not. I went with my best friend and his girlfriend. By the end of the 1st day my mate was wishing he came alone.

LOADS of single girls, mainly from Miami, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, etc. Frequent champagne 'after parties' in the jacuzzi's at 3am after being in the clubs. Got caught in a few compromising positions, almost chucked off at the docks in Cozumel for doing naughty things with 3 young Mexican ladies.

The islands were good as well, but as others have said you don't get to spend much time on them. Dunn's falls in Jamaica was AMAZING.

This.
Cruises can be awesome, and most aren't for old people.. They have theme nights most nights and as said, girls get loose in international waters. Go with a few mates, get roudy and if something bad happens just push the body overboards.

parents been in baltic/norway, Aus/NZ and blue river cruise. They loved it and are thinking of planning more. Go for the good ships. Some have told me that if the ship sucks then the trip will too.

Been on loads of them when I was younger. All P&O ones out of Southampton bar one which was out of Tilbury. Longest one was 3 weeks.
Stayed in Europe mostly; usually in and around the med and up around the Baltic.
All were cracking holidays for kids and adults. Kids can just be left to it and often don't see the parents until dinner in the evening.
Some cruise lines are a bit too formal in the evenings though for my liking where you sometimes have to wear shirt and tie or dinner jacket evening meals but I more ships are getting a lot more casual now though (expecially American owned ships.)

I'd definately go on one again given the opportunity.

Sounds awful to me, being stuck on a shop with bugger all to do that you couldn't do at home, and paying a fortune to be stuck with old farts.

Risks of cruising
But it still happens. According to website Cruise Junkie, 319 cruise and ferry passengers and crew members have gone overboard since 2000, with 2015 recording the highest total when 27 people toppled into the sea. So far this year, the count is 17. Generally, such instances tend to be down to suicide, drunkenness or foul play.
Year by year | How many people fall of cruise ships
On Sunday morning, British air hostess Kay Longstaff was pulled from the Adriatic Sea having plunged from the Norwegian Star as it sailed 60 miles off the Croatian coast. The 46-year-old said her yoga fitness and singing had helped her survive 10 hours in the water.

A BRITISH air hostess who survived 10 hours floating at sea jumped off the cruise ship after a drunken row with her boyfriend, it is claimed.
Did he push her, or did she jump ?

Can this women be sued for rescue costs, or, will she sue the company for not providing adequate safety measures.

Been on 2 cruises one with friends as a tester and another with me wife and kids.

I was totally thinking I was going to hate it but loved it. We have another one booked for 12 days and 5 ports next year.

If you haven't been before maybe test a short one out and see how you get on but I highly recommend based on me being so against them in the first place i was totally surprised.

I was 33 when I finally thought a cruise would be kinda nice, I'm 34 now. 2006 was my last holiday for my sisters wedding in Italy. Holidays just aren't something I do. 2000 was the last time we had a family holiday, mum, dad, brother and me. My mum would have loved it most and that's what motivated me most to think about a cruise holiday, but she died in February after being diagnosed in October so there just wasn't time.

Been on 3 now.

Norway for 1 week, carribean for 2 weeks and Guernsey and back for 2 nights. All with P&O.

Never thought I'd enjoy them, for old people right? Actually pretty good, especially for visiting a new country/area each day or two.

Waited on hand and foot, brilliant food etc.

Probably deserves its own thread.

If she can prove she fell overboard because of a safety issue (faulty railing, trip hazard etc) then sure she probably has a claim.. However you're encouraged to act safely on the open decks, not sit or lean over railings etc. I'm sure accident through negligence is probably covered off in the booking terms somewhere.

I went on a 10 night cruise in May to New Caledonia & Vanuatu. I absolutely loved it!

We went with P&O Australia from Auckland....

Our ship was the Pacific Jewel, she's quite an old ship (built 1989) but had just had a refurb, you could tell she was aging in parts of the ship though. We had excellent weather and mainly calm seas, only one day out of the 10 we had ~3 metre swells but even that was tolerable for me, others on the cruise got sea sick. Food was OK, nothing special, except for the one meal we paid extra for, i had a nice wagyu fillet steak, it was really good! Entertainment was plentiful and excellent, most of the days at sea was spent sunbathing at the aft of the ship with a duo / solo acoustic band playing, i opted not to pay for all inclusive drinks, however, they were similar prices to bars in NZ anyway so i wouldn't have had value from the all inclusive package anyway. We splashed out for a mini suite, it was the best room on the ship and had a bedroom, then a dining living area and a balcony right on the 12th deck. Our ports were great, from a deserted tropical island to Port Vila in Vanuatu, where you can still see evidence of the tropical cyclones that devastated the island in 2015. The people were fantastic though, it was a great insight into the way they lived etc. My favourite stop was Mare, they had the clearest water i have ever seen with the whitest sand i've experienced, and plenty of reefs to snorkel at, we saw so much marine life, it was amazing.

So, to answer your question, yes, i'd highly recommend a cruise, i can't wait to do it again, although i reckon it'll be a few years yet since i'm just in the process of opening a restaurant! Hopefully though, i can do a round the world cruise to make up for it!

Went off season with my dad back in 2012 after the loss of my mum.

10 days, balcony room each. MSC Divinia. Barcelona, Funchal, Tenerife, Genoa, Casa Blanca, Malaga, Rome.

Had a good time, bit of an old people ship but I did meet some people my age. Was great - all inclusive - hit the buffet, the gym, great dinners.

Next time i'd do one of the crazy Caribbean cruises.

Kind of the way that I always see it, although I haven’t got half a dozen bars at home, and tables groaning with food in various dining rooms, plus if I want to go somewhere for a holiday, I don’t think of the cost, I just go.
Many moons ago, I had an American girlfriend that I would hook up with whenever I was in the NY/NJ area.
I arrived one time, called her, and her girlfriend said that she’d got a job dealing blackjack on a Caribbean Cruise ship, and she’d get her to call me, where was I staying?
To make a long story short, she called me from St. Maarten, the Dutch island in The Antilles, and suggested that I fly into Nassau, Bahamas, where she’d be for a day or two.
She smuggled me on the ship, and I spent a week going around the Caribbean on Carnival Cruises dime, until we docked in Miami.
That was great, but I couldn’t imagine doing it for a week or more as a planned holiday, I have a low boredom threshold, and if I’ve had enough of one bar, I’ll look for another, same with restaurants.
Someone said, but there’s half a dozen bars on the ship, but I said yes, but it’s always the same crowd, at least if I’m in Tampa FL and get bored, I can drive to St Petersburg FL, and see different faces.
