Crumbling wall where toilet cistern attaches

Hi all

I had my toilet replaced yesterday as the other one was broken. The issue is, the wall where the cistern attaches is very poor quality, and is just crumbling away. Overnight, this has caused the cistern to come away from the wall by about 1cm. One of the screws holding the cistern to the wall, which was tight yesterday right after installation, is now very loose, and when wobbled, you can hear the wall crumbling onto the floor behind.

I want it fixed, and I want it fixed properly. Will this part of the wall need replastering, or is there some other solution to the problem?

Many thanks

Michael.

Is it the wall or the plaster?

is your bathroom prone to damp?

It's the plaster I believe (I'm a total novice!). The bathroom IS a damp room due to the shower... no extractor, but a window always open. It's not damp in the sense of damp in the walls.

Plaster doesn't support a cistern full of water - it should be in the brick, if your brick is crumbling I hope you rent :)

Most likely they just used plugs/screws that are too small for the holes.

The screw was probably drilled into a mortar joint and not the brick itself, and as the mortar is generally soft the screw and rawlplug will pull out. Like Telescopi said, it should be screwed via a suitable rawlplug into brick. If the brick has crumbled then its more of an issue, either you drill into another brick or replace the broken one, which is abit of a bigger job, or you could botch it with abit of cement. If its a cinder block wall you will need a special wall anchor as normal rawlplugs pull out easily.
