Cuba will start clinical human trials of a vaccine against HIV this year.

The announcement was confirmed by the director of clinical research of Cuba's genetic engineering and biotechnology centre, Dr Verena Muizo, at the International Biotech Conference-Havana 2012.

"In terms of the vaccine against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), it should start soon," he said.

"We hope in the second quarter of this year, or in the third. It is a clinical study of individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus, but it is a phase one study, for safety, and to start to try this possible vaccine.

Dr Muizo said the vaccine, known as TERAVAC-VIH-1, would start as a small study in just a few patients.

"The clinical study that we are going to do is going to be done with a small number of patients, 30.

"These are individuals that have not reached the Aids stage but are instead in the seropositive stage without reaching the clinical Aids stage."

A seropositive patient tests positive for HIV antibodies, but still has an immune system strong enough to fight off opportunistic infections that can cause complications with patients with full-blown Aids.

The researchers working on the HIV vaccine, though hopeful, were quick to point out that the investigation is still in the early phases and they will not know for many years whether the vaccine is effective or not.

"The vaccine is starting its clinical evaluation and we hope it works.

"But really, we need a lot more time to really be able to show its effectiveness as a product," Dr Muizo added.

In December last year a group of Canadian scientists won approval to start testing an experimental vaccine on humans.

Developed by researchers from the University of Western Ontario, it received a green light from the US Food and Drug Administration.

If this works, wow...

It's about time we get a breakthrough in something. What's the report, does it look legit? I ask because cure for cancer is found practically everyday, that miraculously gets blocked by "evil money hungry FDA" to force people to buy medication.

It's all over Sky News, as for the actual science report, I haven't a clue.

So how does this work?

Surely an HIV Vaccine would mean you wouldn't get HIV after having the vaccine yet they are giving it to people WITH HIV but not AIDS.

Are they expecting it to cure HIV i.e. remove HIV from the body?
Are they expecting it to prevent AIDS i.e. an AIDS vaccine as opposed to HIV (you can still get HIV with it just not AIDS)?

I am not trying to be pedantic, just not sure what it's actual hoped result is...

Any examples you'd care to reveal to us?

It's a vaccine, it won't cure aids. This small initial trial is not to establish effectiveness it is to establish if it is safe. It'll be years before the effectiveness studies will be done. Drug testing is complicated and time consuming.

On a different hardware forum, which was a habitat to many Americans(why I left that place eventually, I can not cope with their...you know what I mean), there'd be a thread now and then about evil FDA blocking cancer cure, it's never large R&D company it's always a single doctor. So unless its making a lot of news in mainstream media I've grown to be very skeptical on "cures".

The extract says that they're using HIV-infected patients in the testing, not that they're planning to give the vaccine itself to people with HIV. I doubt it will remove HIV from already-infected patients?

Like Glaucaus said.

It's a safety trial. They're giving it to people with HIV to see if there are any side-effects or unforseen reactions between the drug and the HIV.

Effectiveness trials will happen later and will be complicated as nobody is going to willingly be subjected to the virus.
