thinking of going to vista but want to know how it is currently with stability and compatability so wanted to ask a few questions before deciding on switching.

my spec is the x1900xt, dual core opteron, 4 gig of ram.

1) how is vista's general stability so far?
2) how are the ati drivers in vista?
3) games i will have installed: CnC3, company of heroes, TDU, GRAW, Just Cause, toca 3, age of empires 3, battlefield 2 + 2142, DOW dark crusade and starwars battlefront 2.

4) does tray tools work in vista? if so is it advised to run traytools in vista?
5) how is video encoding performance in vista?

thanks

In my opinion Vista is geting better. I have XP Pro on one hard drive and Vista Ultimate on the other so I can have the best of both worlds and I always have an OS to fall back on should anything go pear shaped. BF2 works fine on vista as my mate just installed it and say's it has been playing flawless, I haven't got round to putting it on yet, I've just been using it on XP but I will get round to it in the next day or two. I'd imagine 2142 works fine too as it is virtually the same as BF2. As for TDU I'd like to know myself as I have this game installed on XP and will be installing it on Vista

Fine for me. I've had one blue-screen so far and I caused that by addressing some memory in a dodgy way in a program I was writing. Which probably doesn't count. Really this depends entirely on drivers for your hardware, and is indeed the main sticking point for lots of people because their hardware manufacturers just haven't been on the ball when it comes to Vista drivers. If all your hardware has compatible drivers your Vista experience should be fairly plain sailing.

2) how are the ati drivers in vista?
They're fine, I'm running the latest 7.3 catalysts with the hot-fix applied and I've got no issues at all.

3) games i will have installed: CnC3, company of heroes, TDU, GRAW, Just Cause, toca 3, age of empires 3, battlefield 2 + 2142, DOW dark crusade and starwars battlefront 2.
Out of them I've got CnC3, Company of Heroes, DoW Dark Crusade and while it's not quite the same I've got Star Wars Battlefront 1. They all work perfectly, the first 2 are designed with Vista in mind so they put saved games in the right place in c:\users etc too.

4) does tray tools work in vista? if so is it advised to run traytools in vista?
I don't know what that is, can't comment.

5) how is video encoding performance in vista?
I regularly encode stuff for DVD, it's just as fast as it was in XP. The limitation there will always be the hardware I guess.

Tray Tools works great. It's in beta for vista but all of the important features work. OSD, overclocking, fan control, forcing settings work fine.

hi

i have installed vista on my laptop and have no problems yet since release
i think its much faster and better for keeping your computer up to date.

i dont know why people keep posting these threads saying vista or xp???

everything will be vista soon :)

I like vista...sometimes quake 4 crashes on launch though...once im in the game it's fine......only problem I've come across but apparently this is fixed in the 1.4 patch soon to be released.

Like most OS changes if you don't mind the small (and potentially not so small) issues that are going to be reported and less than perfect state of driver support then go for it. I've never been a fan of upgrading untill the first service pack has hit and had it's subsiquent issues patched. By then driver support is normally at a level it can be deployed in a business enviroment.

this sounds good so far, very nice to hear. my laptop which i haven't used for ages is running xp, so i guess i may slap on vista if it gives better performance.

my laptop is pentium m730, 1.66ghz with 2 gig of ram. hoepfully vista will run good on that bar the aero effects.

good thing is that vista is being iron'd out quite quickly so should be up to xp level within a matter of a few months. guess i may leave xp on my main pc for another month or 2 then switch to vista.

my main concern with vista was my gfx card overclocking but now that someone mentioned that tray tools is working i guess there is no major drawback in upgrading.

Errm not for me mate? I've downloaded the latest beta but vista and its damned signed drivers bs is stopping it. I've tried disabling it many times but the command line trick doesnt work on retail (did great on rc1/2!).

Is there a definate way to disable driver signing yet? As that would help me out loads (tv card still not working!).

A bit poo for me. My system reliability performance monitor is about 7/10 at the moment. It has blue screened on me a few times [from Windows update, would you believe] and fails to shut down about 5% of the time when I tell it to.

2) how are the ati drivers in vista?

Pretty much perfect.

3) games i will have installed: CnC3, company of heroes, TDU, GRAW, Just Cause, toca 3, age of empires 3, battlefield 2 + 2142, DOW dark crusade and starwars battlefront 242

I have run Condemned, Need For Speed Most Wanted and F.E.A.R. with no problems at all.

4) does tray tools work in vista? if so is it advised to run traytools in vista?

Erm no idea.

5) how is video encoding performance in vista?

Porn looks great!!

stability is perfect for me as are the ati drivers with my x1950pro. admittedly i don't play the newest games so i can't really comment on that. but all my old ones play fine. you can't set vsync through the ccc anymore. only if a game supports it through it's own options can it be set. this isn't a limitation of ati's drivers though but rather vista itself.

only niggles for me are with the user interface. windows explorer is a bit clunky compared to xp. but as a whole, it's more than usable. :)

The command line trick should work but you'd have to run it every time you booted. Since I signed the drivers myself its not asked me about it though.

TDU works fine in vista
TDU doesn't start on my system with Crossfire enabled... just crashes to desktop a few seconds after the screen goes blank. It did exactly the same thing on XP though so it's not an OS issue.

More than happy with Vista, but i do dual boot with xp for games. Though BF2142 works with 64-bot Vista and doesnt with 32-bit xp.

ive had loads of problems with games in vista

main ones bf2142 TDU and stalker

first off drivers aside EA reckons bf2142 is only tested on win xp which is stated if you install on any other o/s

so they aint bothered if it works or not they dont need to support it apparently because the game should play win xp only not vista ( no one can upgrade if they love the game EVER !!! )

as for TDU and stalker only problem there is poor fps or bad stuttering

i really love vista and everything about it ...........interface layout extras and speed in most apps............... but gaming wise its not the best performer :(
