Currys sales man BS?

When we got our tv the currys salesman tried to sell me their overpriced power surge protectors with a demonstration involving poking me in the arm simulating a spiking AC. Apparently, when these tvs were designed, they forget to allow for the Hz of the UK power grid which means not using an expensive plug w/fuse from the retailer will damage your tv.

Knowing more than the average joe about electricity I had a very, very difficult time keeping civil but my mother and girlfriend were there, and i didnt want him to assign me a duff tv out of spite.

when I purchased my new TV last Friday I was met with similar salesmen.

The comet guy was quite rude telling me Panasonic didn't make a 46" set. Finally convinced him otherwise and asked what deals they did (knowing full well what was on offer in store and on the website). He came back and told me they had no deals and that the TV was £1,999.99 :D:D:D:D:D It was £1,649 in the shop btw

anyway, he goes on to tell me that Plasmas used to have very poor blacks and they have only just caught up with LCD (think he got that back to front).

The best bit though was the dreaded £100 HDMI 3D cable. I explained that I already had an HDMI 1.4 cable (as if they even really exist, but told him that just to shut him up). He goes on to tell me it might be v1.4 but is it 3D compatible :D He was really miffed when I told him I didn't want it.

In fact, the guy seemed very rude even though I was spending quite a lot of money. In the end I went to Currys as I'd had enough of him and his lies.

I never shop in comet any more. I won't go into details but their pre sales is only marginally better than their after sales support which is frankly appalling.

Comet's ineptness just annoys me. This case wasn't just them being inaccurate with technology and not knowing the products they were selling, the wrong information cost that salesman a sale.

We were getting a DVD Recorder/VHS combination unit. The old VHS deck had finally died (and all our 1990s home video stuff is on VHS) and whilst we were recording programs to a Humax PVR we wanted to permanently save stuff to DVD. The DVD Recorder/VHS combination would be replacing a DVD player and the dead VHS deck.

I'd pretty much decided that we wanted Panasonic's offering (the DMR-EZ48), and we wanted to get it in town there and then. Trudged around a few stores and Comet were the cheapest. I can't remember how much it was, but it was in the £250+ region IIRC.

Salesman comes over and asks me if I want any help. I accept his offer and ask him about the different connections on it. He's very big on plugging the HDMI port on the back (upscaling DVD player) and the DV port on the front (for recording from a Video camera).
Me: "Those two SCART ports on the back, are they both outputs? Or is one an input? If one's an input that'd be great as I could record from the Sky+ Box / Humax PVR onto DVD for permenant archiving".
Him: "Nah sorry mate, they're both outputs. Only input is that DV port on the front"
Me: :(

So away I go empty handed.... to Google. The second SCART port on the back can be used as an input for recording to DVD, as can the RCA/S-Video jacks on the front.

So I come back later and buy it, from a different salesman :p (I did look online but Comet were actually cheaper!). Git still tried to flog me Monster SCART & Coax & HDMI cables though .

It's actually embarrassing how little 'some' staff know in these places. A shining example was Currys again on Saturday. I'm pretty sure someone knows I'm coming and picks the biggest moron to come over and speak to me, all so they could have a good laugh at my frustration.

Was nosing around my local Curry's Mega Store, when a sales gal walks over. All smiles and friendly, asked me if she could help. I was standing my the Samsung's, but told her I'm here to check out the G20. Straight away she was out of her depth. Fair enough, I didn't expect her to know it was a Panny, but some training would've helped. It is after all one of Panasonic's flagship TV's.

Anyway, I walked to the Panasonics and she trails along, babbling buzzwords, trying to hide her previous faux pas. We find the G20 and I mention it's a really good looking TV and one of the best Plasma's out there. Lo and behold, she doesn't agree. Says she can show me a Pasma with better colours. Curious now, I agree to let her show me, secretly hoping that they still had Kuro's for sale.

She walks me to the Sony section and shows me a LED

I walk out.

You really cannot make these things up. From this day on I will never again speak to a sales person in any electronics store. I'll decided what I want by researching on line. Go down to the shops to see it with my own eyes and go back home and buy it on line. It's not worth the frustration buying it from a fool.

Currys/ Dixons staff are probably the worst sale advisers you can get, when compared to JL and RS its a bit of a joke. I wouldn't advice anyone to use their website either, I tried buying a TV from them last year and was put through hell.

the most hilarious thing about DSG retail group stores is that sometimes one of the websites belonging to the group will have cheaper prices than the instore brands.

They re-jigged them around recently to make Dixons online only, and all the highstreet stores either Currys or Currys Digital.

If you go into a currys and ask them to price match a dixons price, they wont, they will deny all knowledge and explain its a different company. So you go home, place the order on the dixons website and it gets delivered .... on a currys van from your local currys store !!!!

Utterly ridiculous, should just let you order instore at the dixons prices and save themselves the cost in delivering it to you.

The 'regional manager' in a panasonic store recently tried to flog me a "gold plated" optical lead over their standard 'medical grade' cable.

Finding this quite funny, I questioned him at length on the benefits of opaque metal in the transmission of red light. I really hoped he would notice what a stupid sales pitch it was, but he carried on for ten minutes trying to push it. With me still not biting, he changed his pitch and moved on to the oxygen free copper percentage of the glass...

This was too much, so I then (in an act of self indulgent troll-ism) asked him about the shielding against far end cross talk on an optical cable and whether toslink headers need to be grounded. Both of which he was adamant this cable was capable of.

It's great that BestBuy have finally opened a store in the UK (lakeside I think?), they really are an awesome electronics store and the ones over here the guys really know their stuff and will bend over backwards to help you.

It's ideal for your average buyer who only wants a good TV to suit their budget. For people that know a little bit more than your average punter, well, we don't really need much info apart from seeing the TV with your own two eyes.

Just research the set you want to buy, do some price comparisons, see it in person, then buy online.

I've done this with every piece of tech that I can find cheaper than the highstreet. Where the highstreet are the cheapest, or if you have a relative that'd rather buy it instore, I just walk in, ask for assistance to the till (as they usually have to get the TV for you), whilst repelling all sales pitches.

When I bought my Kuro I asked my local dealer to "give me a good price", as I'd seen it for A LOT cheaper online and he said he could throw in a OMGWTFBBQ-HDMI lead

Case in point.

I work with an old guy who used to work in one of these shops. The other week he was telling me "When Freeview goes HD they're going to stop using the Waltham transmitter" (Waltham being our local transmitter). He was then trying to tell me that all Freeview signals would be transmitted by satellite, but still received on your ordinary rooftop aerial.

My best guess if that's he's getting mixed up with the digital switch over and Freesat. But I also know that he's the kind of person who can't be corrected when he thinks he's right so just didn't bother trying to correct him.

Dixons and currys/pc world are different companies same owner, same as game & game station both owned by Game but run as completly different companies.

Dixon's is online and airport as tax free only, there are no high street stores that's reason instore won't price match.

Dixons is there to compete with other online e-tailors, same as pixmania also owned by DSG

2nd.
went into hedgend 2in1 megastore owned by DSG and asked 3 collegues if a pionner amp they had did HD audio and none of them could answer, 1 told me it didn't do standard DTS when it was clearly marked on the amp!
I only asked as it was a good price and i couldn't remember if it did or not.

went to bestbuy ok they were busy, the bloke in there didn't no but did search online, and it didn't (they had the same amp) but I walked out with an onkyo 607as it was there 20% off day and as was ex demo nocked an extra 10% off! bargin!

I'm another plasma convert after owning a couple of LCDs, and my family have now converted too.
Plasma isn't perfect, there are legitimate reasons for wanting an LCD, but for movie/general use at a non excessive budget...9/10 a plasma tends to be better.

Always worth reviewing the options at the time though because it's all about whats out at the time and equivalent pricing. My mate has an 'LED' LCD, and he still appreciates my Plasma, which is a now-ageing 42PZ80.

I also used to work at PCW, and will agree with those who've said the range of knowledge between colleagues massively varies. Some have an interest in the stock, some don't. The trick is finding the ones who care/know thier stuff, and that can be a challenge, especially with floor managers often despatching staff to various areas of the store for coverage, rather than to areas where they have stronger knowledge bases or interest. (and some have none whatsoever haha)

That is quite sad, but unfortunately again comes back to the point above. Training IS slowly getting better in DSG (my brother continued to work their after I left), however some staff have a vast amount more product knowledge, or even focus on customer service than others.
The other unfortunate truth is that HiFi/AV is not a focus of DSG as a brand, thus even if they bring in experienced staff from other stores, it doesn't guarantee they will know a huge amount about that particular stock, as it's not what they're used to covering, effectively those megastores have to cover a wider 'curriculum' than the normal PCW/Currys, and the training is never exceptionally in detail, often beyond what is needed to sell it.
I've had rather poor experiences similar to those you mention even with CSA in places like Richer Sounds, who focus on AV tech, so it's not solely limited to DSG (for example in regards to HD Audio/HDMI).

The sad truth of the matter is that in general, DSG staff are not paid that well, nor are they on commission, which isn't exactly a great combination, not to mention are surrounded by management and management policy that wants them to sell addons at all cost. The people who care, or really known thier stuff will often move on in due time to other roles/jobs, or sometimes simply due to being frustrated 'by the system', and as the wage grades go up, so does the expectations for you to hit targets and sales figures, so in essense the ones paid more are not necessarily those who know more about the kit, but those who sell more in line with targets in terms of addons/margin etc.

Yet when you order from Dixons for home delivery lorry they use the Stock from your local Currys store and use the Currys Home Delivery lorries ???

You've been brain washed mate ;)

I had this with my TV stand. Asked the delivery drivers myself where they came from.

stock comes from main hub which is in newark (if memory serves me right) and there are no Dixon's vans so yes it's a currys van which delevers the stock as it's owned by the same company but operated in completly different ways.

Dixons is online only now, it was in high street but as brand got bad rep it was split into 3 companies:

1)currys - white/brown goods
2)pc world - pc's laptop and home entertainment which crosses over with currys
3)the link - phones, pda's, sat nav ect - now defunct so currys now sells those goods
