Custard Creams

It's the same thing for Rich Tea biscuits and more or less the same for Whetabix clones.

Cornflake clones are a bit more iffy, but then they are a third of the price.

I believe the cheaper supermarket packets exist purely so they can convince people that the 'next step up' is a superior product and thus charge more for them.

The 'basics' justify the increased price of the 'standard'.

Well, you can tell pretty easily.

Some companies make the "lowbie brand versions" in the same factories, if the packaging shape is the same (glass jars are a good indicator for this) then they are usually as good - as others have mentioned.

But again, some things don't work if they are made by cheaper brands - best to try once, see how it is (see how it compares nutritionally).

Having worked in and ran warehouses for a couple of food related industries there isn't a lot of difference between the products.

The first was a potato factory, all the same tatties but different grading levels. Aldi for instance had a higher % of bad tatties in than Waitrose, but only about a 5% difference.

The garlic bread factory (garlics breads, pizza breads etc) and the ingredients varied but the ingredients were identical from tesco's best to aldi's own brand.

Although, the way the food is treated is more important than the quality tbh! Chilled goods left outside in 25'c heat for 3 days etc when I first started at the bread place :( disgusting!

I was told that a lot of own brand products are from the same factory production lines but often with less QC and less of the more expensive ingredients that contribute to overall quality and taste of certain products.
Personally i'd guess that about 80% of ow brands i've tried are as good as the original.
With jaffa cakes i always buy own brand, they taste fine. The difference comes when you taste a real one to compare to. Otherwise, they're fine, stop being snobs! :p
