Anyone been on holiday here before?

Am looking for a nice bucket and spade holiday, mainly for the kids and my wife and mum.

From what I have seen, it appears to fit the bill:

Nice beaches
Lots of history with plenty to see
Some resorts seem very family orientated

Soo, to anyone who has been, is it worth me going?

Aye, fantastic place to go, go for Paphos as its nice and family friendly.

Stay away from Bar street on a night as its full of knob jockeys :)

I'm sure Freefaller will give you a more in depth reply.

Well I'm slightly biased as I'm part-Cypriot, but yes it's a fantastic place. IMO it's become a bit too touristy and some of hte places have been ruined a little or adapted purely for tourism rather than maintaining the local charm, but I can see through that.

The south-west coast is favoured by the Brits apart from those seeking the lasers and ear bleeding rubbish from Ayia Napa (which incidently used to be the resort that the local would escape to - there used to be only a couple of hotels and lots of small family villas... and that's it!).

Larnaca is very pleasant and a little closer to being "central" from the point of view of visiting the capital Nicosia (30-40min drive) and if you wanted to venture across the border, it's maybe about an hours drive from Kyrenia, and Famagusta.

I'm not THAT familiar with the south west coast, bar a few of the touristy or sights of interest type of places, but for general questions about Cyprus, and it's history and it's people by all means ask away.

I shall be there this year as I always am every year and I can't ruddy wait!

I got married 2 years ago in Paphos. It is a great place for families. I had my wife, my son (4 at the time), my nephew (3 at the time), my dad and his girlfriend, some of my wifes family including a 9 year old girl and a 12 year old girl.

Everyone enjoyed the 2 week holiday, and I still have my ball and chain firmly attached.

It is a very nice and friendly place to go.

Larnaca is the worst airport I've ever been to, however once you're outside of it things pick up nicely. It can be a tad hot though so pick your timing well!

The locals can be a bit of a pain in the arse, We had this half French half Cypriot hassling us in a bar, he wouldn't leave us alone until we had a picture taken with him :/

my parents had that, (but my uncle knew the guy) wouldnt leave them alone untill my parents had drank all his homemade wine he had with him. They got ****faced off it haha.

I can post it if you want you ****. :p

Sure the locals can be "irritating" but remember it's a different culture, bear in mind you could be just as "irritating" to them too. ;)

June, July, August is VERY VERY warm, often touching the 40s.

Larnaca airport ain't the best, but i's been getting increasingly better over the past few decades - you should have seen it in the 80s compared to what it's like now!!

Nah, the locals are fantastic, practice your Yah sou and kallee-meh-ra they really appreciate it :)

*Spelling* :/

Another vote for Larnica, stayed there for a week - walked out the back of the hotel and straight on to a gorgeous beach, water sports for the more active, plenty of sand and water for the nippers to dig in or splash about in.

Plenty of restaurants and bars that are not filled with space cadets with dummies and glow sticks....

Thanks for the replies all.

Sounds promising soo far.

Would prefer somewhere "quiet" with a bit more hussle and bussle nearby if you need it although as it is a family holiday, do not want it too crazy but dont want a morgue if any of that makes sense and is not too contradictory.

A good beach within walking distance is essential.

We would be going in even June or July so maybe a little warm for the little ones but with plenty of sunblock and water and keeping them out the midday sun, im sure they'll be fine.

Wouldnt mind trying some watersports at some point, not a biggie if that is a bus ride away.

Is car hire considered worthwhile? Some places you goto, you are sometimes advised to avoid it for one reason or another.

We lived in Paphos and loved it, as you say nice beaches, good history, and quite good night life. Also its not far to drive to the Troodos mountains for some amazing views and to cool down! if you are not driving they have plenty of jeep safari's around. there is also plenty of beaches to find off the beaten track head towards the Arkamas, again you would need to hire a 4x4 if doing that. Also Polis is worth a trip to. All these within very easy driving of Paphos.

( i want to go back!)

A few friends have been during July/August and complained about having to had spend hours in the shade or inside their air conditioned hotels because of the heat.

We’ve been to Paphos many times, it’s a great place. Lots to see further afield if you hire a car. May/September is a great time of year to visit. You can still go on the beach in mid October.

I Like it :)

Avoid the end of July August if you can, as its very hot even for us that have acclimatised.
saying that thats exactly when we 1st moved out here and it wasn't to much of a Problem. had no AC and couldn't even Open the windows wide incase the Cat escaped her New home. we where Glad when we got Our 1st Ac Unit installed though.

We're (couple + 2 kids, 3 & 5) heading to Paphos, Coral Bay area towards the end of June for 2 weeks and really looking forward to it. After a lot of searching round it seemed the best location for us to base ourselves from as we needed good beaches close by and aren't really interested partying at night. We found some good deals on villas as well so it was only marginally more to have a villa to ourselves than an apartment. Car hire seems to be a requirement if your staying any lenght of time as there seems to be a lot on offer to go and see :).
