Hi guys,

Got my D700 now, but as ever trying to figure out whats what!

Any tips for general settings?

So far: Beep off, Shutter locked for memory card, firmware is already updated 1.02 I think.

Out of the box seems to under expose compared to the D7000 (only tested indoors)

leave ISO on auto or?

Cheers

If using Av mode use auto ISO and set the minimum shutter speed that works for you.

Auto ISO is also good in manual if not using flash indoors etc.

Move all the settings you use most to your 'my menu'.

I have the preview button set to enter the top item of 'my menu' which is the ISO settings.

For times where you need to compose a shot fast use 11 AF points. If you do you can get to any AF point corresponding to the rule of 1/3's in two botton presses and back to the centre again in one press of a button.

use 51 AF points when you need precision and the AF point differs from the usual compositions.

I also reverse the dials so the back wheel controls the aperture, but that's because I came from Canon.

Go into the Exposure fine tune and set a minor negative value. This will help you hold onto highlight detail. The DR however is not quite as good as the D7000 and unlike the D7000, it will show banding if pushed too far, but generally speaking you have plenty of headroom. Also you can overexpose the D700 a bit more and retain highlight detail. The meter does get fooled sometimes so it's good to have the extra headroom.
