Dad's new car, remap

Hi all,

Dad's just bought himself a 3door 3.2 DID 51 plate Mitsubishi Shogun, he has asked me to do some research regarding getting it remapped/chipped?? Anyone have any idea if this is worth doing? If so anyone know of a decent place to get it done in Bristol ish area?

Yeah my thought exactly, not too hot on the subject though so unaware if a bit of an ecu tweak could perhaps do something for the economy?
 
No idea about a remap, but if a tuning box is your/his thing, DTUK claim the power will go from 160 to 195bhp with 460nm torquesies. Also that the 0-60 decreases from 13.5 to 9.0 seconds, so must widen the power band considerably. Economy usually goes up a few mpg with like-for-like driving.

My old man's got a 3.2 DiD Shogun on a 51 plate too, only the LWB version... he's seriously considering going down the tuning box route with it.

Bought a DTUK ECO2 tuning box a few weeks ago for my 130bhp Mondeo TDCi. I think it's fair to say that it has completely transformed the car. Oodles more twist at low revs, power arrives nicely across the rev range instead of a huge lump, less hesitation when flooring it and less soot production. Engine seems smoother at idle and my economy has gone up by around 5mpg. Last 2 tanks I have seen an extra 50-60 miles per tank.

Might get round to writing a more complete review after another few weeks, but I couldn't be happier with it. Took about 3 mins to fit it too. Oh, and insurance company classes it as a fuel-saving device, so no hike in premiums either. :)

Apparently not, but from driving my dads I do know that it's very slow to rev and you get a huge wallop of power from about 1700-2200rpm and that's about it. I'm guessing that the tuning box solves this narrow power band.

Oh yeah there's no doubt they work well. I had one on my Yaris and it really transformed the car..it pulled right the way through the rev range (all the way to 4.5k RPM ;)). It's just 4.5 seconds sounds like a crazy amount of time to make up with some extra torque and bhp. I suppose if the standard car was highly restricted from the factory?
 
I have never driven a tuned Shogun, but the standard one is a bit agricultural.

I can't imagine a 3.2litre 4-pot would ever rev particularly well. The review does sound a tad optimistic, but I'd be surprised if the 0-60sprint wasn't made a second or two quicker.

Where do they quote the improvement in 0-60? I can't see a drop of that amount being realistic.
 
On their fleabay ad, there's a review of the thing by some chap who bought one of these boxes. I found a review on a 4x4 site pretty much claiming the same.

Give it a few weeks (if the old man gets a wriggle on) and a few runs with the stopwatch, and I'll be able to say for definite!
 
On a vehicle like that to reduce the 0-60 by that much with such little tuning is probably impossible from the physics/engineering aspect of the equation.

Limits will include Drive Train Losses, Tyre Size, Weight Weight Weight, Drag, Gearing and so on.


1-2 seconds off may happen or it may not most likely not.

bought the same chip last week for my 07' 3.2 DI-D Auto LWB. Very easy to adjust, no increase in smoke but heaps more power. I had to try and measure the improvement so my son and I equipped with a stopwatch did several 0 - 60mph runs. Standard 13.5 secs chipped 9.0 secs! AUTO!! It really is a giggle. Thanks lads.

Did you tell them about the %age BHP increase when you declared it? Any mod that increases BHP should put your premium up, regardless of what the company decides to call it :)
 
Remap should get him a few more mpg depending on how he drives..

More torque means he can drive like a grandad :D
 
Remaps arent always about speed. They can drastically improve mpg, power and torque curves to improve the engine and driving it.
