To everyone seemingly pleased over getting a tax rebate, are you not annoyed that they actually over taxed you £X amount in the first place? It's not 'free' money you know :p

True but it's better than a kick in the plums which not getting the rebate would be. I'd be even happier if I got the interest credited on the amount I overpaid but we can't have everything I guess - not for the fact that it amounts to much, it's purely for the recognition of the loss.

Nope, they even send the tax man a letter each year saying that xx amount is expenses, but without fail they will try and tax me in it.
Your payroll dept should apply for a dispensation to allow that those expenses that shouldn't be taxable won't ever be reported to HMRC.

If they don't do this, then the strict approach is to report all expenses (whether or not they'll ultimately be deductible) on a P11d. You'd then need to claim the deduction for any you are allowed in your tax return (or fill in a P87 if you don't otherwise have to complete a tax return). If you don't do this, then HMRC will probably deduct all the expenses from your tax code for the following year. This sounds like what's happening - so it most likely is your payroll depts fault, as they could avoid even reporting them in the first place and the associated hassle if they got a dispensation.

It's worth noting that some expenses are actually taxable - e.g. if your employer just gives you an allowance for buiness travel instead of reimbursing specific receipts.`

Is this department run by the biggest bunch of fools ever!?!

I'm owned nearly £600 from working over the summer and today a letter with HMRC on the front came in the post. I thought awesome my cheque has come finally. Open it up and what's this, a letter telling me that I have over-paid tax and I'm due a tax repayment and I'll get a further letter telling me how much this is!

YES I KNOW I AM ENTITLED TO A TAX REPAYMENT YOU ******!!!!!!! That's why I rang you twice and sent you a letter with my P45 just like you ask me to every time I work over the holidays!

ARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!

Whilst it is both easy and convenient to blame someone else - HMRC (and yes, they do make their own mistakes) or a payroll department, the person responsible for ensuring the tax they pay is correct is the individual and the individual only.

In fairness, most people get a salary of x, and then get paid a percentage of it and assume that everything is ok. Often it isn't.

The tax man has very kindly taken £243 from my Wife. E.g us.

She works for Wiltshire country council. Obviously we have only had the letter today so she will have to find out more detial etc.
