just got a cheque for £2500 odd

they didn't include my tax free allowance for two years I couldn't believe that they would be able to make such a basic mistake on someone's tax amount. Always always check your payslip tax amount vs something like www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk to make sure your not paying over/under

Or, more likely, your employer made the mistake.

About the only way you'd get a tax code like that from HMRC is by filling in a P46 telling them you already have another 'main' job.

I got £1138. At first the letter said, you owe us £1138, at this point I believe lots of swear words were said. Then I phoned them, and the guy said, er, actually, we owe you £1138.

I was on emergency tax for a long time, even though I phoned them and said, hey I'm on emergency tax.

Wow, I wonder how many people were stung like this? Quite a few will meekly accept that they'll pay those kinds of charges even though it's possible they shouldn't, or are even owed money...

Our tax system is a disgrace :(

I absolutely hate getting letters from the tax man. Although, earlier this year they chased me for details of the first 3 months of 2008 when I returned to NZ. To our surprise they owed us $2500 in unclaimed tax credits! Went down nicely on a PS3 and TV :p

I wept a little last month when my commission cheque came through. I'm amazed how much tax takes up of my salary. Granted, it was a good paycheque, but to take nearly half, not good.
