Dark Age of Camelot

I spent 3-4 awesome years in DAoC, I go back to it now and then (on free shards). For me it was the best MMO experience I've had (it was also my first MMO). However, I would not recommend a brand new player to start up on the game, unless you had an rl pal or something that's a regular that would take you under his wing.

The game is just far too mature and has a large 'hardcore' community, back in the day it was quite easy for newbies and casuals to get along just fine, but i'd imagine it'd mostly be the hardcore community left and would be quite hard to get into the game because of that - if you were in with a hardcore group though, it's a fantastic experience.

Anyway, if I were you, I'd look elsewhere, and by elsewhere, I mean wait for Guild Wars 2 to come out. :)

Go for it IMO. The game is really old but you won't find better PvP in an MMO. The learning curve will be pretty steep but when I played on Ywain the community was pretty good so try and find a nice guild.

They have made it so much easier to get to level 50 and RvR ready. Most of the high end gear can be bought with seals so you don't need about 5 accounts to farm everything anymore. You can even buy buffs from an npc now afaik.
