Didnt they connect satellites up to arpanet back in the 70's?

And im almost certain that the Shuttle had IP based comms with earth (though not for mission critical stuff)

It makes sense, IIRC the initial reason for the Internet was to provide a communications system that would be resistant to damage by providing the capability of routing around damaged nodes, what with the anti-satellite missile test a while back it would make sense that a similar system is being touted for space communications should anything kick off!

I wonder how long it will be before datacenter folks like Verio offer rackspace in orbit or on another planet :p Their marketing slogan will be something like "your mission critical data will survive any future nuclear holocaust" :p

I thought the internet came about because the United States MOD needed a computer network that didn't use point-to-point communication as it was pretty impracticable (A whole line dedicated to one connection. Need 50 people to connect your website? Your server would have needed 50 seperate lines). I should probably do some proper reading considering I have an assignment based on it :)

I think the story is that they created it so that even if one router gets nuked, the packets can go via another router. Obviously quite a valuable piece of technology if your country is about to get nuked and you need notification of the first strike so that you can counter attack ;)

Rather ironic that one of (or THE?) man's best invention was born out of nuclear warfare...

Its an urban myth that the internet was developed to withstand nuclear war. The original intention was to simply give computer users a standard way of connecting dumb terminals up to multiple machines, that until that point used proprietary protocols to communicate, meaning you needed a different terminal for every remote host you wished to use.

Only later was it realised that the protocols taht were developed with have the characteristics needed to be able to reroute data efficiently, such as in a nuclear conflict.

Oh right. Yeah I guess that is pretty useful :)

Indeed.
