Database of registered companies

Is there an on-line database of registered companies, or a way if finding out if a company is legit? Don't really want to give any Nigerians my cc details.

Companies house hold details of all registered companies in the UK.

company house should have all directors listed costs you about a £1 for the info iirc

Where is the company?

Companies House has a full register of UK companies. It does not extend outside the UK as far as I know.

http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/ and WebCheck service. Outside the UK will be more complicated and likely cost money.
