I've always wondered: Americans usually speak their significant dates in the same month/day format, like 'September 11' and 'December 25'. How come for independence day tho, you always hear them say 'Fourth of July'?

Because it's a holiday, just like Dec 25 is Christmas and Jan 1 is New Year's Day.

And surely we don't always say a date that way. It isn't set in stone that we need to always say the month then day.
