I like to think respect is something you can lose, meaning I try my best (I'm not perfect) to respect everyone but it's then the actions of other people which determines if I should continue to.
Also the notion that the simply act of standing up is a sign of respect is so old it's beyond belief it still exists, pointless exercises in feeding higher up ego's. Like someone said, it's 2012 not 1800's or the Military, ideally we already respect others but to think just because kids are going to stand up in class as they are told, doesn't mean they will respect any more or less than anyone else.
It's just an old way of showing respect when in reality it only means something to those who can't read past it. If I was in the position people had to stand for me, I'd tell them to stop and that they show respect in other ways, aka, not being little **** holes and acting up.
