Dawn of War II Beta Thread

There's just not enough substance- why can't they include all the different units that each race has in the actual tabletop game- all this holding back for expansion pack malarky ruins the game.

The lack of customisation is pathetic as well- why can't they have an option to customise your army beyond selecting colours and flags? The interesting part of W40k was the vast choice of wargear (lightning claws, terminator missile launchers, lascannons, too many to mention that were either absent from dow or restricted to certain units) and the different styles of units (different versions of power armour / terminators without helmets / space wolves with all their pelts etc. What about all the special characters like Ragnar Blackmane and Abaddon?

The whole point of armies such as Tyranids and Orcs are that they form massive swarms / hordes.... not engage in small little skirmishes. Why are most of the races cut as well..... wonder when the add-on packs will start! :o

^ Couldn't agree more. Instead of different types of commanders they should have had different army types. So for Eldar you could have had The Biel-Tan Swordwind with access to all the aspect warriors, Alaitoc with access to more rangers and pathfinders and Ulthwe with the seer council and storm guardian squads. That way you could have had all the units but each army choice would specialize in a certain area. Then for space marines you could have a ravenwing army/white scars fast attack, black templars with more scouts and blood angels with the death company.

It could have been so much better with a little more thought put into it.

One saving grace about DOW was that it allowed community modding. If DoW2 is going to allow the same creative freedom with the modders then I can live with the shipped version. It will only be a matter of time before you will be able to mod it to your tastes with an increased population cap, squad size etc. or the reverse if you so feel.

I think the games a bit of a grower. Really starting to dig using the Tyranids, their synapse creatures have a fair bit of depth to them.

Its sort of like COH, but you are punished even more severely for not retreating units and using blob tactics to push forward. Micro heavy I guess.

If by tactics you mean running about retreating like a game of cat and mouse or clicking on some rocks then i suppose you lot are right.

No real STRATEGY to this to be honest, just a load of annoying micro management.

They really should have done a bigger and better version of Dark Crusade tbh.

I am still adament that they have done this so it will be easy to bring out on the 360. Even the graphics are hardly state of the art.

There seem to be a lot of aspects which I liked about DoW changed or removed :(

I liked building stuff and being able to put defensive structures around listening posts etc. (doesn't seem to be in this?)
I used to love re-inforcing teams while in battles (you have to retreat to re-inforce on new)

I think there are some good points like cover behind structures etc, but the whole fun aspect of attacking, moving around map and upgrading (at the same time) is just lost.

I think as said above, a lot of people will go back to playing the original DoW as it was a lot more fun and easy to get into :)

I agree that the missing base building is a bit of a mystery; even CoH has it and it is not a hinderence - don't know why they have stripped it right out. However a lot of the stuff you would get from building different structures is now in the field as upgrades to units. So you are not missing much I think. imo anyway. That said I will miss the base building a bit. However even in the CoH base building only serves to just produce different units only.

The elaborate structures I used to build in CoH are useless now anyway due to the over use of artillery - you really have have a mobile defence that you can use. If anyone attacks your base and sees sand bags, tank traps, wire etc, they fall back a bit and artillery it. No point in the first place.

So maybe elaborate bases would not work in such a game.

If you want to build those kind of bases then I guess empire earth of an 'Age of' game is more your thing.

Agree that base building maybe should not have been taken out however I don't think the game is poorer for it. Will miss not being able to place turrets where I want - so maybe will play defensive commander a lot.

We only know multiplayer at the mo. I believe that there are no buildings in single player.

In multiplayer though. One building built for you at start, you produce all units from here. This is ready made with some defences round it - turrets for space marines for example.

No more buildings need to be built or can be built (apart from upgrading power nodes) though some commanders can lay down defensive structures.

Hm, been playing it some more and to be honest, i think they have screwed it up.

COH was good but it doesnt fit the 40k universe. I mean they have completely torn apart the fluff and background which makes 40k so intruiging.

After many games tonight, I'm getting much better at it. Although I have a strange bug where after a certain amount of time playing, the game will just lock up, every time :( I played with AndyB for about 3 games and I crashed out of all of them! But we did win in each one :p

Hopefully they can fix this 'little' bug soon :)

Oh God, I've changed my tune again - with balanced, good teams, DoW2 is a tense, dramatic, and very enjoyable multiplayer game. There are issues, but on the whole I'm back in the 'yes' camp.

P.S. You're really missing out by not playing with fellow OCUK'ers.

Must say that I am very impressed with this, it really gives you a tense and exciting experience. The role of supression I thinks fits the universe really well and makes it much more tactical. And figuring out how to counter surpression is also a major part of the game.

It confused me a bit when I first started playing as I was so used to being able to unit spam on DOW. But now that I've played it with some friends for 3v3 it's become really fun.

I think the small squads work out really well, and even though a SM squad is only marines, they can take out the other low req cost units from the other races quickly and efficiently.

I think with some polishing this game will definitely be played for a long time with hopefully quite a large community.

not had a chance to play vs others but i have been trying out the different races and so far so good ... ive pre-ordered

the learning curve is akin to CoH where the first few games against normal i would get wiped out quite easily and have trouble coping with the AI harrassment tactics.

due to the small amount of troops you can build it does make you protect the squads you have whilst they gain in levels and you never have to worry about 'rush' tactics, although i admit im pretty useless vs avg players ..

overall i really like it,

nice ingame background :-
