I’ve got a 5.1 sony AV amp (can’t remember the model) and when I play from a DVD standalone player I get a visual informing me the source is DD 5.1 or DTS 5.1 However, when I connect my PC (via a SPIDF) I do not get any 5.1 visual on the amp? (with a DD5.1 source) the actual sound appears to be in 5.1 but it could be pro logic, is there a way to output a true DD5.1 or DTS5.1 from a PC?

I’ve got the following sound card:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SC-001-OK&groupid=701&catid=11&subcat=

Or the onboard sound.

The Amp is connected via digital outputs and inputed into the AV amp correctly.

Any help appreciated as my sound knowledge is OK at best.

Cheers

You need to set whatever software your using to a 'Pass-through' mode. This will send the raw data to the amp and decode it there. What will be happening is its currently being decoded by the soundcard which won't be able to give 5.1 from SPDIF.

Post up some screenies of the driver software etc and I'll have a look for you.

Cheers, i'll have a look into it when i get home, from what you've said i assume passthrough via SPDIF will alow the amp to decode the raw signal and therefore produce true DD/DTS 5.1

I play films (HD mkv and wmv) via
Windlows Media Centre
PowerDVD Prem 7
WinDVD Ultra 8

i assume these will support passthought?
Cheers

I had a good go at sorting out my lack of 5.1 last night, and for DVD’s I have resolved the situation in PowerDVD, I now get DD5.1 and DTS 5.1 displayed on my AV amp and the sound is noticeably better. However, .mkv files encoded in DD 5.1 are coming through as 2.0 and DTS 5.1 .mkv files are coming through as ‘normal sound’. I now know its not a hardware issue but a software one, I’ve not got much of an idea as to what I should do next…I know ffdshow is installed and running when I use Windows media centre and I’ve tried loads of settings to get 5.1 but to no avail…

Can anyone help?

I really want true 5.1! Vista sound control is not practically useful as I can see no clear ‘Pass through’ option, Digital SPIDF is the default at present.

For mkv I use haali media splitter and windows media player. Then for video/audio decoding use ffdshow and this works faily well. In the ffdshow audio config there is an option for spdif pass through.

As said above if using FFDSHOW audio decoder, in the settings set AC3 and DTS to "SPDIF" and you should be sorted.

I've done that and i still get DD 2.0 at best, will double check tonight, also got to get Vista Media Centre to play .mkv files and my work is complete...could be a long night and the first beer is opened at 7 so might end in tears!

thanks fof the help so far

I've noe got DD 5.1, just got to somehow enable DTS, anyone help? Pass through is set up and SPDIF is default but still no DTS (other than from DVD's) and i'm sure the source is DTS

Cheers

so its Vista's fault again...shocker! although i must admit i like vista now, only a couple of things left to sort...the 5.1 been one of them.
Don't suppose anyone has Vista Media Player playing .mkv files?

Something I discovered at my mates the other day with vista. In the sound card spdif properties is a tab showing what formats are supported. Make sure that ac3 and dts are ticked as well as 44.1/48khz. He didnt have 48khz ticked which stopped ac3/dts being sent out over spdif as vista was under the impression it was not supported by the reciever (due to the boxes not being ticked lol). Just a heads up, drove my mate mad for a week or so.
