Dead Space 2 now £15.99... Steam who?

How many times do people have to post that the publishers set the price on steam not valve before people will realise. I don't even visit this part of the forum that often.

I saw this on the purple site yesterday. They are selling it new for £15.99 and £29.99 for download. I thought downloading was supposed to be cheaper? Who in their right mind is going to pay double to download something?

Retailers are being anti-competitive by threatening publishers if they allow download services to undercut them.

This generation, publishers still need retailers to push console titles.

The irony being of course that retailers (at least the high street retailers) have done their best to kill off the PC gaming market simply because they can't exploit it via second hand sales like they can with the consoles.

Then they throw a hissy fit when Steam and other DD services out compete their non-existent PC product range, or even - as in the THQ games - do exclusive deals so you can't buy the games on Steam for a while, like Homefront, a Steamworks game that requires steam which is only available at retail in the UK!

I've read it described as like a spoiled child who throws away an unwanted toy only to throw a tantrum when another child picks it up and plays with it.

wrong. steam overprices everything.

Did you even read what he put?

Thats because it won't be long before they become obsolete and they know it. It won't be long till the only thing they're selling are the systems themselves and original copies of the games because the second hand market will be completely stopped. Its only a small step to Xbox Live and PSN allowing you to dl the entire game online without even bothering with the disc.

The Homefront situation is a bit of a joke though.

Only £13.99 now.

Quite suprising really, only been out a few weeks - usually takes a lot longer for big games to fall in price by this much.

Also, dunno if any of you have heard about this but i hear its getting custom control support...

Thanks to Gareth and many other overclockers forum members :p

It is, Ubisoft were in a similiar position last year with a few delayed Steam releases in the UK, strangely, it is only Steam who gets affected D2D and others do not get the same treatment. Although seeing as the UK's largest high street Game retailer as openly attacked Steam in recent months, it is fairly obvious where the blame lies.

How times change, years ago, it was the publishers who were evil now we all agree it is the retailers :). It is in the publishers interests to sell their game through as many channels as possible.

I am unsure if this down to the industry as a whole in the UK or maybe just 1 or 2 retailers. I am of the belief it is just one retailer.

With Steamworks titles though, it is not a major issue as I purchase all Steamworks titles on disc anyway as it inevitably works out cheaper however you still get the convenience of Steam. Obviously, all other stuff, I purchase on Steam.

From the big river place and one other.

A bit quicker than I thought tbh, it's only been out a couple weeks :p

And it's still 29.99 on Steam.

In short, Steam is crap for new releases. I wonder if they'll ever decide to be more competitive?

Screw brick and mortal retail. Let the dinosaurs die if you ask me.

Considering it was essentially at the Retail price it wasn't that bad at release it's just they don't really change it to reflect actual market price once it decreases.
