On the road....
As the title really, my mates ti4600 has died suddenly, he's considering this £35.19 XFX GeForce 6200 256MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (AGP) as a direct replacement.

It resides in his #2 machine which is a Celeron Sct 478 2.6ghz 512MB PC2100 DDR & MSI/ Via chipset motherboard. (Supports 8x AGP)

Hes a maximum of £35 for his budget & thats "skinted him" :o

Alas, he's fallen on hard times since the day he bought that ti4600 for £399! he does not want anything second hand from flea bay or the MM.

This pc spends little time gaming, Carom3D and Medal of Honor are about as taxed as it gets!

Thoughts appreciated before I go out & pick up the XFX 6200 tomorrow for him.

Thanks. :)

The 6200 should be fine of it's not a gaming rig (and it'll handle MOH no problems). Hell, if he's really that short on cash then save another few quid and go for the 128MB version!

Well, as I said, I duly went to Oc/Uk to collect the card and plugged it in.
Amazing! (hardly how most peeps describe a 6200!) the massive ti4600 which has now been replaced by a tiny little card with a passive heatsink! - How technology seems to have moved on.

The now defunct ti4600 cost my mate about £350 ,as I said, back when he bought it.
I did'nt honestly expect a replacement card costing 10% of the ti's cost to apparently, better it! Well, it did.

Much to my surprise, I've spent about an hour on it playing BF2 - just for the sheer hell of seeing how the rig would hack it - (at low settings I conceed) and it was fine!

I did'nt expect a £35 gfx card to do that! especially, when I consider the grief I've had in the past with BF2 and considerably more powerful rigs!

All in all, my mates chuffed, job done.

Thanks Guys. :)

Good stuff. I think people get a bit carried away these days - as long as your expectations are realistic and you don't mind losing a bit of eye candy (and you don't have a HUGE widescreen display...) then the budget cards are great value for money.

Indeed. In low settings/resolution, a card costing 10% of the price gives far more than 10% of the performance. And for games like MOHAA, there's really no point spending more than £35.

One thing I would be interested to see would be how the 6200 compares to cards from older generations... i.e.

FX5700
gf4 ti4200
9500pro
etc

The trouble is that most reviews don't compare with cards going back more than 1 generation at the most. In the budget sector it can be quite interesting seeing how well modern cards compare with mid-high end cards from previous generations. E.g. the much maligned GF4MX could actually go toe-to-toe with the GF2 Ultra!

i'd rather have a 5700 than a 6200 any day.

If a 5700 could happily run BF2 tallied to a Celeron 2.4 & 512MB RAM then I'd agree with you!

Prior to its death the ti (which is about on par with a 5700 iirc) could'nt hack Doom3, Desert Combat, Farcry etc - believe me, I tried! - yet now, it runs BF2, and happily at that! - And all my mate will use it for is 3D pool! :p

Times move on, welcome to the GFX card market!
