Decent active speakers....Rokit 6?

A friend is asking which speakers he should get, he wants them to be loud and still sound excellent (for parties and personal use) but for them to be stand-alone with no separate amp/cd player/pre amp. He will be using an iPod and PC to send sounds to the monitors.

I suggested KRK Rokit 6's but soon realised that they require a mono input for each channel and a kettle lead each channel, which isn't massively practical, however it is do-able if we use a 3.5mm to phono lead and split the channels....leave the speakers on 0 gain and use the iPod as the volume control.

Does anyone have another suggestion please, I am hoping to find some like PC speakers where one cab has the controls/amp and sends it to the other, thus not requiring cables everywhere.

Most active speakers follow that design but there are some products which match your needs, the Audioengine 2/5 for example: http://audioengineusa.com/Store/Audioengine-A5plus

Not sure how loud they can go of course, there's quite a lot of different active speakers out there so you'll find something, I hear AVI ADM40's are quite nice too (http://www.avihifi.co.uk/) but they're a tad expensive.

Yep, they are a direct competitor for them.

I demo'ed them both in a DJ shop and found the RCF's to sound really nice and neutral, and they looked a little less obtrusive than the KRK's in the same price range. They sounded pretty much just as powerful as well.

Keep a look out for the Adam F5/7's, they should be released soon.

They're expected to blow away a lot of the competition.
