I'm having thoughts about getting a banger to get me around.

Pug 106 1.5D seam to be in my price range which is up to about £1000.
Its needs to be cheap to run get about 60mpg

Can anyone think of something else ? :)

Cheaper the better really and I'm not bothered about looks or performance as it just needs to be cheap to run.

Yeah know what you mean,

Probably doing around 900 miles a month, Mostly commuting.

Need something cheap to buy and to run,

Rover 220 D I'm assuming that'd be lots better than a 106 D and probably looking at the on paper mpg does about the same.

Currently drive a Pug 306 Auto which is good but i'm sick of the 34 mpg even when driving like a granny :)

Also new car doesn't need to be an auto.

I wouldnt want to do lots of driving in a 106 1.5D. What sort of driving do you do?

You currently spend £106 a month on fuel.

You'll not get 60+ mpg as an average from a 106D, probably nearer 50. This will cost you £80 a month.

Is it worth the bother to save £26 a month?

Just get a manual 306, plenty around for well under 1k and you won't have to downgrade into a horrible little tin can that is the 106.

Mmm I didn't do all the maths first !
Although thats still a saving !

I'm sure if I drove a 106 or 220 D the way I drove the 306 I'd get 60 mpg:)

Ok back to the drawing board, Cheers :)

Get a Xsara TD. I get about 50 to the gallon ragging its **** off everywhere and its a far far superior car to the miserable 1.5D 106, I should know I've had 2 of the crappy things. The 306/xsara is a lot more comfy, handles a lot better and has actually a bit of poke whilst still getting better MPG. I got mine for a grand and its got electric leather seats, aircon, auto wipers, 4 airbags, cd changer etc etc. If you truely aren't bothered about speed get the non turbo model. Just DO NOT get a 1.5D 106, truely hateful car compared to the 306/xsara. And thats saying something because I hate the xsara too!

edit: http://pistonheads.com/sales/867661.htm a low mileage 110bhp hdi that you could probably haggle to close to a grand

also for some daft reason the xsara was cheaper to insure than the 106
