Decision made, going all prime...

Fish eye are a niche. They are fun, they are striking, they can be use to excellent effect. However, you can't go out and shoot an entire shoot with it. If someone comes to you are ask you to shoot (his dog, a scenery, wedding), you can use the fisheye for a few good shots. But shooting the entire job with it is nuts ! It's a good compliment.

Why 35L? because I know that's as wide as I need, MOST of the time.

I know.

I am another person that uses only primes...but I just like it :)
maybe because I started with crappy zooms and L primes and that made my mind hehe

Do I think about getting a zoom lens ? yes. Will I get it ? maybe but not likely ;)

Ok, two things.

1. Everyone said you dont need lenses etc, i said i was going to order a fisheye and got critiscised for it. Then #1 photo comp last month used a fisheye. Well he couldnt have got that shot with an 18-70 kit lens could he ?

No but that doesn't necessarily mean that if you have a fisheye you'll take photos worthy of a competition win?

You really do get hooked up on equipment far too much imo. No one person takes pictures of everything...hence why nobody has every single lens on the planet.

I take pictures of people, weddings, portraits...hence why I have the equipment to do so. Yes I COULD buy a fisheye and take weird and funky pictures with it, but it won't really benefit me in what I do with photography. My next lens will either be a 35L or a 135L - as thats what suits my photography needs.

Figure out your photography needs, a simple answer of 'everything' means you don't know what they are :)

when i went to Venice for example i bought a good zoom, 80-250mm, and the reason is because things go from being very far away to very close with no space to manouevre. That coupled with the spontenaeity i got with some shots meant a prime wouldn't have been succesful for me. I do agree the quality is better on a prime tho...

Raymond, have you found the 35L restrictive at all, I am thinking of a 28mm 1.8 to dip my toes in fast wide angle stuff. I know its not a scratch on the 35L but the closest fast wide angle thats cheap to try and doesnt get duff reviews.

I don't completely buy that argument myself (and I'm saying all this having just coughed £1500+ to Nikon for a 35mm f/1.4), it's great in low light, it's ok for seperation and decent bokeh (on a 35mm anyway, the 24mm less so but such wide lenses obviously don't have such shallow DOF as the 50 and 85, even at those apertures and their bokeh is less fantastic by comparison). In any event, I'd challenge anybody to distinguish between the 35mm prime and 24-70 from either manufacturer in image quality terms...

Nope, i shot for 3 days with it 100% in Rome.

Then again, when i use a compact, i never zoom. Using the 35mm on my SLR is like back to my compact days. I find it oddly comfortable.

Buy what you want. Only you know what you want to take photos of. However I would say that if you are lucky enough to be in the financial situation to buy every lens on a whim, you may spend less time using each as you get them, and as a result understand them less.

I love using a 50mm on a crop body, I also like the detail in macro shots, so I bought those lenses. I've also got a 12-24 for the occasional landscape shot, or structural photo.

Now I'm not saying I've nailed using any of the lenses (so far from true it's scary :D), but unless you're a lottery winner and don't need to work, therefore have unlimited time to take photos, I'd doubt you'll do yourself any favours rushing through things.

Still, you could end up being one of those annoying people that suddenly become really good, almost over night when it suddenly clicks with the right lens, and go back through them all :D
