This is common conception, but isnt true.

A cheque is valid as long as it is legible :), there are no time periods.
 
Im not sure about expiry but with a bankers draft have the funds already been deducted from their account..

I had the same thing with a cheque that i didnt get around to cashing.. best to contact them and let them know, i know they gave you the money but if they arent expecting it to go out it could land them in the poop
 
not really.. first line was posed as a question just neglecting a ?

if the money is already out of the account and you know this then havent you answered your own q? since it cant expire without the bank returning the money to your folks

Not exactly. After 6 months the bank has the right to refuse to honour it but that does not necessarily mean that they will. If I remember rightly.
