Another vote for Skype.

I paid something like £25.00 for an 0161 Skype in Number so people can ring me and that included something like £17.00 worth of calling credit. Skype to Skype is free. Skype out is something like 0.1p to UK land lines and 1.1 to the US.

I also get free calls local, national & International via Virgin Media

are 0845 and 0870 numbers free on skype also?

I thought you had to buy credit for skype and then you get free calls only during the "free times" hmmm

do I have to buy a skype phone?

any more information would be appreciated

thanks in advance..

Skype out numbers you can buy 01's & 02's so for Manchester it will be 0161 *** **** London 0208 *** **** etc. No weird numbers or anything like that

08 numbers are at a reduced rate iirc

Skype can run right through your PC and have it ringing. As long as you have a Mic or headset you can make and recieve calls. However you can buy Skype phones which OcUK sell Here. Now for the Skype phones you don't need your PC on. You can do Skype to Skype for free but you do need to buy a number to dial out to none Skype numbers. They do a good offer on buying a Skype number, answerphone and credit for around the price I paid

skype to skype is free, I see.....

But then as well as buying a number dont you need to purchase "credit" to dial "non skype" numbers....

are you saying 0845 + 0870 as they are "non skype" are charged then...

so you have to a) pay a one off fee for your skype number and b) purchase credits when you are not calling skype users...

Please clarify..

cheers

Dont fancy all this fuss tbh, just want a normal number with cheap calls. Dont want to use Martins site, because it may show the cheapest, but it doesnt give any user opinions.

So im asking who people are with and how they rate them? :)

All the user opinions are in the telephone section of the forum on the MSE site and your question gets asked 50 times daily.

On the 18185 number, it's no inconvienience to enter it each time before a number to save a few bob. The call quality can get questionable. The billing is online and they now offer text messaging to most countries for 1p per message.

The bill gets paid from your debit card, so if for example you were living with someone else and using their phone, you can still pay for your own calls this way.

It is a great way to save money on calls.

We're with NTL/Virgin Media, with a normal landline. We have OneTel, which helps to keep the cost down - especially during the weekends, when landline calls are all free. We use MoneySavingExpert's callchecker to find direct dial numbers (currently 1p/minute to landline, 6p/min to mobile) for peak times and international calls, as it's cheaper than either NTL or OneTel. You could say it's a little fiddly to dial the lengthy direct dial number, wait for the computer to pick up, and then dial the number you want, but it's worth it for the price. You soon get used to it - I've more or less memorised the common ones now. :) The cost goes onto your normal bill. Quality of the call is usually fine - if it isn't, there are usually several numbers you can try for the same cost anyway.
